Re: E-MU modules...pt. 2

Fab,

All Emu gear including the original Proteus 1 has 1/4" output jacks. That being said, there
is no inherent difference in sound quality between 1/4" jacks and RCA jacks. Even 1/8" jacks are
theoretically of similar quality. The units that have RCA jacks tend to be more lo-fi consumer
grade stuff, so this is probably what you've experienced. The quality is in the design and
manufacturing of the unit, not the jack itself. That being said, RCA jacks can sometimes suffer
from imprecise manufacturing. The barrel is sometimes too narrow and doesn't make good contact.
1/4" jacks also suffer from imprecise manufacturing, though not in the same way. Dual banana
jacks are a far superior connecting system to RCA or 1/4" jacks, though the extra bulk that they
add have made them not the most popular of connectors.

Hey there,
Does anybody here have an E-MU module (in addition to their xx-7),
and if so, can you tell me if you find the stereo outs on the modules
to be of inferior sound quality to that of the xx-7's outputs? I've
been doing some research, and it looks to me that the modules only
have one set of RCA stereo outs on the back. Is that right? In my
experience, stereo outs always add a small amount of hiss, and I
really don't want to purchase a unit that's going to hiss at me. I
much prefer 1/4" outs (like those on the xx-7's and on the MC-505
Groovebox). I suppose I could just use the headphone out on the
front. Please let me know what you think of the sound quality of the
outs on the modules. Thanks for all your help,
Fab
