E-MU modules...pt. 2

E-MU modules...pt. 2

2004-03-08 by Fab Claxton

Hey there,
Does anybody here have an E-MU module (in addition to their xx-7),
and if so, can you tell me if you find the stereo outs on the modules
to be of inferior sound quality to that of the xx-7's outputs? I've
been doing some research, and it looks to me that the modules only
have one set of RCA stereo outs on the back. Is that right? In my
experience, stereo outs always add a small amount of hiss, and I
really don't want to purchase a unit that's going to hiss at me. I
much prefer 1/4" outs (like those on the xx-7's and on the MC-505
Groovebox). I suppose I could just use the headphone out on the
front. Please let me know what you think of the sound quality of the
outs on the modules. Thanks for all your help,
Fab

I have a Proteus 2000 module, and that had 1/4 Jacks, there are know
E-mu module I am aware of that use RCA's. The P2K and PX-7 are two of the
quietest devices I have in my rack.

Sorry missed a bit, also the 128 voice modules have 6 mono outputs, main
stereo, sub out 1 and sub out 2 (the sub outs are the TRS the will allow
mix inputs), all of which are 1/4 jacks. The only RCA type socket on the
unit is the S/PDIF connector.

Mark,
What is the difference between, say, the Turbo Phatt and the Mo'
Phatt, apart from the extra outputs? Are their ROMS any different?

The ROM's are the same.

Mo'Phatt is 64 voice with only a single stereo output, and one expansion
slot (for another ROM) the Turbo verions add's another 64 voices (128
total), 4 more outputs, and I think you need the turbo to get the S/PDif,
and three expansion slots.

The turbo also has the extra midi port, i believe. so it's capable of
playing 32 midi channels, where as the Mo' is 16 midi channels max.

If I remember correctly, all the 1/4" jacks on the back support
balanced cables which further reduce the likelihood of picking up
noise.

Fab,

All Emu gear including the original Proteus 1 has 1/4" output jacks. That being said, there
is no inherent difference in sound quality between 1/4" jacks and RCA jacks. Even 1/8" jacks are
theoretically of similar quality. The units that have RCA jacks tend to be more lo-fi consumer
grade stuff, so this is probably what you've experienced. The quality is in the design and
manufacturing of the unit, not the jack itself. That being said, RCA jacks can sometimes suffer
from imprecise manufacturing. The barrel is sometimes too narrow and doesn't make good contact.
1/4" jacks also suffer from imprecise manufacturing, though not in the same way. Dual banana
jacks are a far superior connecting system to RCA or 1/4" jacks, though the extra bulk that they
add have made them not the most popular of connectors.

Not from what I recall, hardly any gear in my rack has balanced outputs,
not very common on synths in general in seems (Nearly always an option on
outboard and mixers).

They are all stereo plugs, but are all unbalanced. The left channel
doubles as mono, the right channel is a stereo jack (I think), and all
the subs are TRS send/receive.

Aaron,

Actually you got it backwards. All Emu gear (from the Proteus 1 onwards) has the RIGHT
channel as mono only and the LEFT channel doubles as a stereo out (with a TRS cable). This of
course holds true if only one channel is used.

Kurzweil is one of the few companies that has balanced/unbalanced outputs.
