AW: [xl7] metal/rock production

2004-05-10 by Frodo

The XL-7 (or any other EMU command station) is - in my opinion - a very nice
Sequencer for making music in general.
The problem with the genre you are interested in is, that the XL-7 has
mostly electronic sounds (it uses the X Lead V2 Rom).
If you want to produce metal/rock music you would like to have some extra
ROMs/sound boards which have good guitar sounds/more acoustic drum sounds on
them.
I think the "Protean drums ROM" would feed your need for the drum sounds you
are looking for and the "Vintage ROM" (if I recall correctly) and "Sounds of
the ZR ROM" could probalby give you some guitar/bass sounds you would like
to have. (Tough I don't have one of them, so I cannot comment on the guitar
sounds of these boards. -> See the reviews of these ROMs. Someone shortly
posted a "Vintage ROM" review in this group.)
If you have a PC and be able to play guitar you'd better (in my opinion)
stick with a program like Cubase for playing a real guitar. Then "Protean
drums" would be the only additional ROM you might need for your XL-7.
If you are about to produce some new metal you might like the X Lead 2
sounds as well ;)
Btw: The Command Station with the "Protean drums" installed would be the
PX-7 ...

Hi. I just purchased an xl-7 on ebay. I don't know if it was the best
buy for what I want to do, but it was all I could afford. I want to
make metal or rock type music. Obviously a band would be better, but I
am too shy to work with other people, and I'm sure that alot of people
on here would agree that making an entire song by oneself is decent. I
was wondering if anyone here uses one of the xx-7s to make anything
similar to metal rock or anything like that, and what else besides the
emu is needed.
