metal/rock production

2004-05-10 by serakprep

Hi. I just purchased an xl-7 on ebay. I don't know if it was the best
buy for what I want to do, but it was all I could afford. I want to
make metal or rock type music. Obviously a band would be better, but I
am too shy to work with other people, and I'm sure that alot of people
on here would agree that making an entire song by oneself is decent. I
was wondering if anyone here uses one of the xx-7s to make anything
similar to metal rock or anything like that, and what else besides the
emu is needed.

The XL-7 (or any other EMU command station) is - in my opinion - a very nice
Sequencer for making music in general.
The problem with the genre you are interested in is, that the XL-7 has
mostly electronic sounds (it uses the X Lead V2 Rom).
If you want to produce metal/rock music you would like to have some extra
ROMs/sound boards which have good guitar sounds/more acoustic drum sounds on
them.
I think the "Protean drums ROM" would feed your need for the drum sounds you
are looking for and the "Vintage ROM" (if I recall correctly) and "Sounds of
the ZR ROM" could probalby give you some guitar/bass sounds you would like
to have. (Tough I don't have one of them, so I cannot comment on the guitar
sounds of these boards. -> See the reviews of these ROMs. Someone shortly
posted a "Vintage ROM" review in this group.)
If you have a PC and be able to play guitar you'd better (in my opinion)
stick with a program like Cubase for playing a real guitar. Then "Protean
drums" would be the only additional ROM you might need for your XL-7.
If you are about to produce some new metal you might like the X Lead 2
sounds as well ;)
Btw: The Command Station with the "Protean drums" installed would be the
PX-7 ...

You might want to look into the Protean Drum ROM too, it has a lot of rock
kits, and definitely more drum sounds suited to what you want versus the
XL-7 ROM.

I agree- you'll want the Protean Drum rom. I don't play guitar, so I
use a sampler (Boss, SP-505) to get "live played" l guitar riffs to work with. (let me
know if you want more info. on this)

I have two other roms- XL & PK-6. I haven't found a way to use the
heavy guitar type presets so that they sound good/realistic. The muted/acoustic guitar
presets are good/useable, though. That's my 2-cents.

Hello.

That's interesting (using synths to make metal). I echo the other
post about the XL ROM not being really well suited to rock in general
(although some of the XL sounds are edgy enough to be rockin') Maybe
nu-metal or prog-metal?

I'd suggest adding a ROM or two (I would strongly recommend 'Pop
Collection' for guitars and basses, and 'Protean Drums' for big
acoustic kits)...then invest a few bucks in stompboxes (guitar
effects pedals), particularly overdrive/distortion. Pedals are cheap
and effective (no pun intended).

Yes, solo music production is a joy, especially for those of us
without actual instrument chops :)

have fun

Thanks for everyone's replies. Is the stock rom on the xl-7
removeable. Could I trade it for the protean ROM, or is it less
desireable. I'm just starting out with everything. This was my first
purchase ever. I knew it was geared towards dance stuff, but I thought
I found a good deal on a really nice one, so I figured I could just
add sounds like you all say.

How can you apply effects from a petal to sounds that are on the xl-7?

Thanks for everyone's replies. Is the stock rom on the xl-7 removeable.
Could I trade it for the protean ROM, or is it less desireable.

>>>Well, you CAN remove it entirely and replace it with the Protean ROM,
but why would you? IF you can have them both (really, up to 4 ROMS), then
I think you're better off keeping it and using both. Just cause the XL-7
ROM might not be most ideally suited towards what you are trying to do,
doesn't mean you won't find a lot of uses for it still. If you don't have
a lot of money right now, you could probably skip the Protean Drum ROM and
just get the Protean Pop ROM for now. It has acoustic kits too, and while
not as good as those on the Drum rom, they are still quite usable. <<<

I'm just starting out with everything. This was my first purchase ever.

>>>Welcome to the group first of all! I think you made a fine choice,
just cause something is made for one style of music, doesn't mean that you
can't use it to greater effect for something else! TB-303's were made to
imitate bass guitar players, but it was the acid house Chicago musicians
who put it to an even better use! :) <<<

I knew it was geared towards dance stuff, but I thought I found a good
deal on a really nice one, so I figured I could just add sounds like you
all say.

>>>Yeah, and don't get all discouraged because you don't have the other
roms yet. There's still plenty of great sounds in the XL-7 ROM, and if
this IS your first piece of gear, you still have plenty to keep you busy
learning for a long time. <<<

How can you apply effects from a petal to sounds that are on the xl-7?

>>>The sub outs on the back can function as send and return effects sends.
Check the FAQ and the manual for moer details. Don't hesitate to ask any
question here either, no matter how basic. That's what we're hear for,
and we have a lot of talented musicians and computer types on the list
willing to help! <<<

I have been spending some time of late on a new music forum that I
think is pretty good:

Some good info and good attitudes there.

Here the new unofficial Emu forums too:

http://www.productionforums.com/emu/default.asp

Mainly for the new DAS systems, but there's an area for other Emu gear
there too. BTW, I'll have an 1820m in a few days, and I'll post a full
review of it and Emulator X once I get it all up and running.

rEalm I look forward to that review as I am tryinig to make some
decisions reguarding the emulator x software. It is up against some
pretty serious compitition.

I'm a kontakt user personally, and I have pretty good knowledge of HALion

some stiff competition.

Depends on what you want a softsampler for I guess. IF you are into sound
design, I'm inclined to agree with you. But if you want a sampler where
you can just buy any sample CD and have it load up the program easily, Emu
x may work better. Haven't gotten it yet, so I really can't say for sure
though.
