Just to clarify, the problems I experienced were not related to being in 
Recording Mode, a bug I knew about at the time and was avoiding.

There's a known bug where viewing either of the list edit screens while
in a recording mode (i.e. step, grid, realtime) can cause hangs.  It
was one of the things I tried to fix in 2.0, but it was tangly and
required a re-write of the underlying data structures of the sequencer.
 I did the re-write, but it caused more problems than it solved, so I
put it back.

Moral of the story?  Make sure to exit any recording mode before
scrolling past the list editors.  Playing is fine, just not recording.
