A simple step is to put the instrument on the same exact power that the mixer is; plug them in to the same power strip. Any differences in potential between the grounds can cause a ground loop and "buzz" on the audio lines. Studios that have lots of different surge suppressors plugged in to different power circuits usually have a lot of noise this way. With an amp involved, same sort of problem.
