The best thing is to record in real time but you can edit with the grid editor and adding a correction with note lenght. The step edit record is also a good way when you're a bad player. A friend of mine tell me that he hold a note a few mesure ( 1 bar ) and he overdub this measure with a partition of note ( 1/8 1/16...) as you want in fact. Hope that help.
