Emu XL-7 & MP-7 User's Group

This is driving me nuts!

I have an xl 7 and have thrown midi drum loops into each of the first
4 empty pattern banks.

I go to the first pattern and change the presets for each of the
channels then save.

I go to the second pattern and change the presets for each of the
channels then save that pattern.

When I go back to the first pattern the channel presets are still
assigned to the presets that I saved for pattern 2. 

Is this machine incapable of saving presets assigned to channels for
each pattern or what?  
Why are the presets set to the same thing regardless of pattern?

What good are 1024 patterns if the sounds for all of them are the same
32 presets????
