You can actually test the simm in diagnostics mode. I think it's the two arrow keys that you need to press when you turn on the power. I had an XK-7 with a bad rom that had to get returned for waranty repair. With the way static electricity works, i'm sure it's happened more than once - maybe you have a faulty rom!

You have a preset selected in your MultiMap for a ROM preset on a Sound
SIMM that is not installed. At least the OS doesn't think it is
installed.

This is not an error in the OS, so there would be no value in changing
the OS. It is doing what it is supposed to do.

When you cursor to that top right field can you scroll to the name of
the new Sound Set you installed? If yes, then the presets that you have
installed are not right. Either they're corrupt, or just not appropriate
for any of the Sound SIMMs you have installed. If not, then you have a
hardware problem, because the OS doesn't see the SIMM as installed.

If the Sound Set doesn't show in the display, it is either a bad SIMM
socket, a bad Sound SIMM, or the SIMM is simply seated poorly.

You can try moving the Sound SIMM to a different socket and see if the
problem goes away. If that fixes things, it is a bad socket. If that
doesn't help, then the SIMM is probably bad.
