Yeah; we've not seen that since the DX7, the D-50, the M-1, the
Wavestation, the VL-1, the K2000, the Morpheus, the K5000S, the Nord
Modular and the Oasys...

E-mu have always been into sample libraries, and producing
high-polyphony, high-quality sample player modules (but these days
with good control systems, modulation and filters, which is the only
reason I'm here).

That's almost what happened in 1983, except that Yamaha were really
keen on enforcing their FM patents; Roland side-stepped this and got
into PCM samples and onboard effects (well, to be fair, Korg predated
that in the DW's, but Roland made it kick ass); the rest is history.
