If you turn on "Rechannelize to track" you should never have to touch 
the basic channel on your keyboard.  The XL-7 automatically reassigns 
channels (as well as outputs) appropriately.  You will need to turn off 
rechannelize to record a multi-track (though not to play one back).

Oh, and by the way, you can use up to 16 channels on a track, but they 
must all be from the same port (MidiA or MidiB), so in your below 
example, 12a & 14a would work (as well as the rest of the A channels) 
but not 2b.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
