questions ...

2002-07-18 by David Jones

AMAIZING how much i've learned and how much i have yet tol earn.
Is there a way to copy an ENTIRE patern to another patern? It's not something that I can see in any of the menus.
Also, If I want to record channels 12a, 14a, and 2b on track 1 using an external keyboard, would I need to record on tracks 12, 14, and 2 and then merge? Or is there an easier way??
I'm also learning the Yamaha A4000 sampler. WHich is a pretty cool unit. I have yet to learn loop manipulation and effects routing. . . . with in time young grasshopper. Pretty soon my production will be as good as my scratching... and then you'll all be runnin scared!!!!

dammit erik , always making things look simple.
What if I DON'T want to do it that way? Is there a way to say I want to record EVERYTHING I PLAY RIGHT NOW AT THIS VERY MOMENT into track one?

Just make sure that Track 4 is set to Channel 4, and that it's the active
track too. Might help to set Track 5 to Channel 5 as well. I don't use
multi-channel record ever, so others may be able to answer you better :)

Re: [xl7] questions ...

If you turn on "Rechannelize to track" you should never have to touch
the basic channel on your keyboard. The XL-7 automatically reassigns
channels (as well as outputs) appropriately. You will need to turn off
rechannelize to record a multi-track (though not to play one back).

Oh, and by the way, you can use up to 16 channels on a track, but they
must all be from the same port (MidiA or MidiB), so in your below
example, 12a & 14a would work (as well as the rest of the A channels)
but not 2b.

Aaron,
Thanks for your reply. Is there a way to record, say, midi channel 04a on track1, and then record midi channel 1a on track 1? or do i always have to have an open track to merge from??

No problem. Yes, in one of two ways:

First, set track 1 to be "Multi A" (near the end of the Pattern Edit
menu). Then:

Method 1. With rechannelize ON (or record), you can just change the
CHANNEL (not track) on the XL-7 to the channel you want to record. You
can even do this without stopping recording. Tip: Try using the middle
4 digit display set to Track/Channel, press the Edit button, and use the
encoder to change channel quickly.

Method 2: With rechannelize OFF, use your controller keyboard's
transmit channel to select channel. This may or may not be easier,
depending on you keyboard.

I'd recommend method 1 because it also works for the pads and with
external gear (i.e. another synth connected to the MIDI Out of the XL-7).
