Help with XP/USB based machine

Help with XP/USB based machine

2003-11-16 by steve_the_composer

Subject to a 14 day return policy, I have a new-to-me XP USB based
PC. Problem: no joystick port to hook up MIDI I/O. Not sure I want
to get into MOTU XT Express (8x8 parallel ort MIDI patch bay) as that
is too heavy duty for current needs. PC only has 3 slots--not sure I
want to tie it up with an old soundcard, just for joystick port.
Budget is extremely tight.

(1) What do other usb-PC users use for MIDI? (and what is the cost)?
(2) Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I will try to price this.

Much to my disappointment, I have discovered that the MOTU XT Midi
Express (parallel port) appears to be totally useless on windows XP.
Maybe I will give up on Sonar 3.

I have had similar problems with MOTU in the past, which is why I
won't ever buy anything they make again. I agree, the USB midisport
is a great way to go, totally reliable - at least my 4X4 one is, on
windows 2000, but I would be money it works great on XP as well. M-
audio is great with driver updates, unlike MOTU.

Thanks to those who replied regarding possible midi interfaces.

Somehow, I managed to install the MOTU Express XT software and
drivers so it works via the parallel port (Halleluia!).

Also, I got Sonar 3 installed and operating.

Still testing the system, so I am wondering if any E-Mu users have
tips for working with Sonar.

Also, if there are any Sonar groups as helpful as this group, please
let me know.  Thanks.

I'm still on windows 2000 and sonar 2.2 until I can afford a new
machine, however there is an excellent news group for sonar, go to
www.cakewalk.com and look for the forum on sonar - they just redid
it and its excellent. I would be happy to share what I know about
sonar with you, so after you scan over there at cakewalk drop a line
and perhaps I can offer some assistance.
thx

I use a MIDISport 4x4, which was only about $120 or so. Works fine for
me.

I have an XL7 (OS v2.0) and am using it with Sonar 3. The only big
problem that I have is that, if I'm recording MIDI to SONAR, anytime
I do any kind of pattern changes, like switching from one pattern to
the next, SONAR's midi recording simply stops. Audio recording keeps
going just fine, but no further midi notes are recorded.

It sure would be nice to be able to record pattern changes, etc.. so
they could be effectively played back through the XL7.

Other than that, if you don't change patterns, it seems to record
just fine.

I can only assume that this is a Sonar problem, and not just a XL-7 issue.
I know I can change patterns in SX and Nuendo without a problem like this
appearing, so maybe try the Sonar support forums too? Just in case no one
else here can replicate the problem...

If I have time tonight I will try and test this on sonar 2.2 - one
thought: you aren't filtering any midi messages? I can't remember
what the default is, but it works with my other gear. You can also
(although this is cheesy) insert a patch change from the event viwer
and maybe the main screen as well. Haven't done that for awhile but
it certainly works, and you can make the patch change as precise as
you want.

Thanks for the heads up on this issue. If I were further ahead on the
learning curve, I'd debug the beans out of this one. I'd start by
looking at filtering midi data on sonar, as dana suggests. I have
found E-loader's midi monitor to be handy to see what kind of stuff
the E-Mu spits out.

Also, I am wondering if transport and routing options might be the
root cause.

Hmmmmm. On second thought, this might be an excellent problem to
tackle to teach myself.

Powering up Sonar now . . .

i might add that, in typical fashion for me, I went home and totally
forgot to test if this worked correctly on my box, sorry

I did some very basic tests: (1) with Midi only template and (2) with
Normal template. On simple tests (1 overdub of midi and audio on top
of two previously recorded tracks), midi data was recorded when I
switched patterns by hand. However, patch changes in patterns were
NOT recorded.

So, my guess is that the cause is (1) user settings/configuration,
(2) system limitations, etc.

Disclosure: running P2500 with XL rom from XL-1 turbo (not sure if
this would make a difference).

Hope this helps.
