Upgrading OS help! (MIDI question)

Upgrading OS help! (MIDI question)

2004-06-23 by Fab Claxton

Hey gang,
I don't own a computer at home (I use the one in my office at work),
so please excuse this very newbie question. What do I need in order
to upgrade my XL-7s OS? I understand that I need MIDI cables, but how
do I hook them up to a computer? I've checked with all of my friends,
and although they have soundcards, I don't see MIDI ins/outs on the
back of their computers. Is there something I can buy that would give
their computers this function? Thanks in advance to anyone who
replies.
Fab

A USB midi interface will set you straight for about $40 (M-Audio Uno).
Not to spam, but I have a brand new Uno (minus box) for sale if you're
interested. I bought it for my laptop and the PX-7, and then bought a
Korg MicroKontrol and I no longer need it. It's seriously been used for
onyl 5 minutes. Hit me back private if you want it.

You can find a serial to midi cable for around $20.

Will that do the exact same quality job as the M-Audio UNO? I would
rather buy something cheaper than the UNO, because it costs $60.00
Canadian (before taxes), and I'll likely only ever use it once (to
upgrade the XL-7s OS). Also, do you have any brands/models of serial
to midi cables that I could search for? (I tried using Google, but I
can only find cables with one MIDI cable end - we need cables with
both IN and OUT, correct?)

I'll sell you my Uno for $25 if you or anyone else wants it, that's what I
was trying to tell you before.

Will a serial interface work better than a USB one? Hard to say, a lot of
factors determine that, and even if you were to give us your PC specs, it
would still be herd to say for sure.

Fab, I have a serial midi adapter (in and out cables) to connect to
your sound card for $10 US plus postage. I paid $20 for it but later
switched to a laptop. Email me if interested. I can send you a photo
tonight if you like. PayPal accepted for $1 more.
