for the most part, if you look for the telltail ripoff signs (ridiculously low price, no photos, sketchy listing overall, etc.) you should be ok. This type of gear tends to age very well. testing everything out and the diagnostik mode sounds like a good idea too. I recommend buying off eBay, I got a PX7 on there for around 400 or so. check sellers feedback and look at completed listings, recent ones, to see how much they're going for. look for a reputable seller with 100 percent feedback, more transactions the better, and preferrably mint condition.

turn the datawheel check for high jumps(fixable from what i hear)
run the diagnostics program when you boot it(power it on while holding
the left and right cursur bottons under the datawheel)
test to see if all the knobs and pads are working.
