My MP-7 is haunted...

My MP-7 is haunted...

2012-02-07 by best_available_technology

Hi new to group, cut my seq. teeth on MMT-8's then RM1X's now after years of being frustrated w/the RM1X bad O.S. I'm trying to get my head around this MP-7 (which I am already enamored with) but...
The MP-7 is now triggering itself? the low C is firing off w/the midi indicator lighting randomly on whatever channel/trk is selected for use/editing,I have reset and rebooted to no effect.
I could sure use some help.

Thx for your time,
-Kevin

I have this exact same problem. When transmit midi clock is on, it's especially bad. Tried reinitializing to no effect.

Ideas would greatly appreciated.

I would suspect the power supply (which has been a hot topic around here lately.) The electrolytic capacitors (and possibly 1 film cap as well) in the power supply have a tendency to fail. It's pretty simple to replace the capacitors if you're comfortable with a soldering iron. I actually have a spare here--if anyone's interested, contact me off list.

It sounds very much like one of the drum pads' sensors is triggering when it shouldn't be. I haven't personally checked the Emu's pad sensors but I'm guessing they will be conductive rubber on the underside of the drum pads, that will contact against the circuit board underneath. I'm pretty sure that the pad sensor circuit board is separate from the others and can be removed.

Take out that board and clean all the contacts thoroughly, both on the pad-side and circuit board side with cotton bud + isopropyl alcohol (or similar alcohol - don't use acetone whatever you do) this should help.

One other possible thing to check for - when you put the sensor board back, don't excessively tighten the screws that hold the board in place, as this can cause the board to sit too close to the sensors behind it and cause phantom triggering of pads. If this is still happening when you reassemble, use thin plastic washers to increase the space between the sensor board and its mounting.

I also have the exact same problem. Always the bottom C pad that triggers. The problem comes and goes. The notes trigger randomly at various velocities and also output MIDI as if the pad has been pressed. Factory reset and o/s re-install doesn't fix the problem. Turning local off does fix the problem but then its just a sound module!

Is your problem intermittent or is it happening all the time? I read an old post on here that describes the same problem but it seemed to get progressively worse the longer the unit was on.

My problem is intermittent to the point that I was convinced the problem resolved itself for a couple weeks ago. I am going to try a new power supply.

Let us know if a new power supply makes any difference. Has your mp7 been in storage or kept in a cold place? I swear mine plays up more when it's cold or has stood unused for a while.
