How to use the sub outs as inputs

How to use the sub outs as inputs

2016-02-13 by inverse667@...

Having trouble getting the sub outs to work as line inputs. I know I must be missing something really obvious. I have a synth im trying to run in. Do I just need a normal instrument cable or do I need to use a trs? Is there a setting in the menu I have to turn on? The manual doesn't seem very clear on this. Thanks

Brian

use an insert cable and only have it connected to the ‘Return’?

For stereo you will need 2x 1/4 TRS to 1/4 TS Y cable.

Hi, Brian.

Since the manuals I double checked are unmistakably clear on the send/return cables, I think there is something more to the question. Jon and Matt are indeed correct. about the need for TRS cables.*

In the P2500/Command Station manuals I looked at its near the beginning under Audio Outputs. In fact, its even in the Proteus 1/2/3 Manual just under Audio, but the content is very similar to more recent manuals. I know the manuals can be overwhelming; I know I spent many hours with my P2500 manual when I first got it.

However, perhaps you were looking for how to route external audio into the E-Mu's synth engine or effects. If so, you can't. As the "Output Section" flow diagram shows, the external audio signal from the rings (of the Tip-Ring-Sleeve--aka TRS--cables) of the subs only gets added to the Main Output after the FX.

If you want to process external audio through an E-Mu, you would need an Ultra Sampler with an RFX-32 card and probably some other option cards.

My guess is that you figured it out, but I thought I'd write up the details in case any one else looks for the answer. *Other than the part about the Ultra, I just gave more detail for what Jon and Matt already.

And for those who would like to use the XL-7's filters for external signal, there's also an option: http://www.rossum-electro.com/products/evolution/

The cool thing about that is analog summing mixers are like 1200 bucks and you get one for free on your emu :)

Considering the the P1/2/3s had no on-board FX processor, I9;d say its a very good guess.

Yeah--I heard about Dave Rossum's newest ventures (going Eurorack) a few weeks ago. Watched a few Youtube video demos/interviews. The filter module looks especially amazing!!!!!! Probably will be out of my budget, though. I have thought about selling all my 80s and 90s gear and seeing if I can afford a eurorack modular.

Congrats to Dave Rossum for getting back into it!!

Nice one, too bad that yesterday my Morpheus decided to go away - first it said "Corrupted RAM! Caution", and then it refused to boot again. Will be checking if low battery could have caused it...

Correction: While they all look super cool, I'd especially want this one: Morpheus

Thanks for the help everyone. wasn't looking to process any external audio through the effects. Just ran out of inputs on my mixer by 1. Turns out I had a bad cable that's why I couldn't get any signal into the subs. My first thought was I must be missing something in the set up and not the dodgy cable. thanks
