okay so there's three people using these things.....
on p 131 in the manual it talks about recording audition riffs. one of the things to do is to hook up the midi
to it itself, which is a new one to me
anyway, can't get this to work, any body ? (of the other two guys out there?)

Yes, I have recorded audition riffs by taking midi out and piping it back in via the midi in. Its not really a new idea. I think its been around 14 years or so. That being said, I did not find it very useful. If I wanted to use audition riffs, it was generally with kits or beats even more so, and recording the triggers for the bts presets served my needs.

maybe i don't understand the application of this
when I audition some presets I like the pattern being used and want to save it as a drum loop
to build up a song idea
if that is possible I would love to figure out why, when i follow the instructs in the manual,
nothing gets saved into the "new" pattern
hope that makes sense

Do you have Transmit Riffs or Transmit Both [Arps & Riffs] enabled? I am not at my gear, so I can't tell you what menu system its in--probably controllers or arps.

One of the Tips and Tricks related to recording arps might help if you wanted to record arps. I think its in the first set of FAQs in the Files section. I had it out yesterday, but don't think I posted it because its about recording arps, not riffs.

Another option would be to record the riffs into a DAW [midi recorder] and use e-loader to put them into your E-Mu.

On my XL-1 with OS 2.26, the button between Audition and Save/Copy is labelled Arp/Beats. In that menu system there's a page called ARP/RIFF MIDI OUT. The options are don't transmit, transmit arps, transmit riff, and transmit both. On other 1 RU P2K variants, the button might be labelled something else. I am not sure about other pre-2.26 OSes.

On my P2500, that page is available from the Arp button (between Controllers and MIDI).

Recording Arp and RIFF Patterns to a Track

Connect a midi cable from the midi out to the midi on of the MP-7, and make sure MIDI Thru is off. You may need to manually erase the 'trigger' note, as well as shift the start times of the arp notes too if they are delayed slightly. Very easy to do with OS 2.0 BTW.

Recording Triggers

To record into the internal sequencer, set the TRIGGERS destination to be "seq" instead of "int" or "ext" This way, the triggers will be routed to the sequencer, which will then decide where to route it based on the track settings (provided you have Rechannelize on).

If Riffs are set to transmit and you cannot record into a pattern, maybe there's another issue. I will see if I can test it. If I get it to work, that Riff are you specifically interested in (if I have it on one of mu ROMS)?

Just tested. It worked--with a caveat or two.
TEST 1:
Using 008^4 on XROM bts:Hard Anthem, I recorded the 4 measure riff [BTS-Hard Anthem] (at least it sounds like 4 measures to me) to a 32 measure pattern slot (I used 127^ because it had been empty [12% memory available].
All midi data from the riff --> track 1.
I used the midi out to midi in approach.
I used realtime record mode, set to start recording as soon as I pressed Audition--CntIn:[quarter note symbol].
Tried it again with a different riff. It seems like the first note wan't recorded. Tried some other techniques, but my audition button is a bit wonky, so I had to do multiple takes and never really nailed it. Also tried starting the pattern recording and then hitting audition at the right spot. If your button fires immediately with not jitter or shut off and your timing is perfect to might have better luck than I did.

On a somewhat related theme: Royce's recent quests for insights on accessing the Morpheus scratch area/edit buffer has prompted me to look at a number of sysex implementations--some I am very familiar with and some I never really looked at [Morpheus, Proteus Ultra, esp.].

Particularly intriguing is the explanation of the scratch area, which is mentioned in connection with the pre-P2K's copy functions. I was aware that the P2K line has sysex copy functions and ages ago I might have tested them. However, I never saw them as being useful for anything I might have wanted to do--until now.

So on my agenda is to explore the Copy Pattern and Copy Song commands. What I can't understand is why those functions have values for "Source ROM ID." I never thought of the P2K sound roms as having patterns and songs that could be copied - including to the edit buffer.

Sound roms can have demo songs, arps, and riffs.

There is a separate command to copy arpeggiator patterns, So, now I am wondering if the Copy Pattern and Copy Song functions work in OS 2.0, if so, what they do, and what the Source ROM ID is for.

Would be super cool if riffs could somehow be copied to an edit buffer that could then be accessed. Probably not because someone would have noticed that by now. But I'll take a look--a mystery to be solved!!!!.
