sequencers

Out of personal curiousity, if you ditched the computer, what would you
use as your main sequencer (and not for live use)? I know you have a few
on hand, just curious which you would reach for first...

its a personal subjective decision, computer vs. hardware. IMO at this
time there is not enought to make one shine so much over the other in
particular aspects to be able to predict or tell someone what is better in
that regard. I have both, but if pushed to choose, would ditch the
computer. But if forced to keep only a computer, would do fine . . . .

you mean I would have to choose? Ack!. Hmm.
I would put a stop to selling my MPC60 and upgrade it to the latest roger linn O.S. (which makes it an MPC3000 as far as seqencing) and use that.
But I my decision to keep just hardware over just a computer was more weighted on what joy and use I get out of hardware synths and grooveboxes and the like for instant playing and for going live. Playing live is always a treat no matter how horrified I am of it sometimes.
If my sole focus were on recording tunes, then I probably would settle with just a computer because, as you say you can master right in there and burn cds, etc.
However, (there is always a however) back to hardware, I have advise many true newcomers--not to music, but to computers--to go the route of hardware recorders like the fancy Akais, Yamaha and Rolands--because again there, you do not have the computer issues, but can record multitrack and burn demo cds. In the end you probably need to go to a mastering house, but frankly, even if you have a computer with every mastering tool on it, chances are, unless you have 5 years to become a golden ears pro, you are better off going to a mastering house if it is a project that you want to sell for real.
So, in a hardware only environment, I would have all my synths and boxes (XL-7) and the mpc60/3000 as the center of all things midi and record to a fancy hardware multitrack harddisk recorder-with an add-on vga screen. Plus I would have the XL7 and mc505 for use for any particular extra sequencing, arpeggiation needed. I wouldn't worry about bandwidth or timing, but just have a nice mixer as well. It sure would be more costly than a computer only (maybe not considering all the software I would feel compelled in my emptiness to purchase).
In a computer only environment, I would have to always upgrade constantly in order to get over my gear-lust grief at having given up all my hardware (my moog aahahahah). Would I get to only use a crap midiman midi controller? :)
