KNOB HOLD

KNOB HOLD

2003-05-10 by boywithpez007

Does anyone know if the XL/MP-7's have the Knob Hold function that
the Proteus 2500 has?
hold a specific key whilst moving one of the knobs it has no effect,
when you release the button the knobs send the values, to avoid a
huge difference in sound if the knob is far from the initial value.

I cant find it anywhere in the manual, but i read it in a review of
the proteus 2500....
if not maybe its a suggestion for 2.01 or sumthing?!?!?!!?

I don't believe that there is any "knob" hold function on the command
stations. There is, however, a touch strip hold function. Since the
touch strip can be assigned to anything that you like, this can be
used in the same way as a knob hold function.

Re: KNOB HOLD

i would not say never satisfied. It just palin sucks when you buy a
product for a particular function and then realize that you cannot do
that with it. IF i was to write a review of the xl to a person that
is just using the xl to just send midi data it would be a great one.

If i was writing to a person that wants controll and to use the
device as some sort of midi controller in live paly as well i would
strongly try and turn that person away just because the lack in that
function.

possibly someone should start a poll of this one function

I love my XL-7 and I really apprcieate the new OS with all of the groovy
featrues, but this was the ONE thing I really hoped they would add. Just
like on the Nord Modular which doesn't have endless rotaries or LEDs, they
give you the knob options for Immediate and Hook. The Hook setting won't
change the value until it has passed it where as Immediate is well,
immediate. If they could only add this function, it would make this thing
unbeatable! But I love it dearly anyways... Thanks to everyone at E-mu who
have taken the command stations this far!!!

hi all

just bought a new MP7.
immediately updated the os to v2.0 and I've to say that I'm quite impressed
by the easyness and complexity (at the same time) of the sequencer.

sure the "knob hold" function would be a great feature, but what about
these ones too?

- solo track (maybe it's there and I've not found it?)
- "no scrolling" option during multiple bars grid recording. if you're
working at fast tempos it can become hard to follow all those leds moving
around....
- possibility of entering gate values higher than 100% when in Grid
recording mode.
- "jumping" between windows made easier, important especially for live work.
- "de-mix by MIDI note" function. i.e. to turn the drum sequence you
recorded on a single track/channel to a multi-track one (one sound/one track).

if i've missed any of these functions, well, let me know... :)
(consider that I've had the MP7 only for a couple of days, even if I've
already gone through the whole manual several times)
thanks

A dedicated mute function would be very nice. It would need to work in
record mode even for the selected track. And as some else pointed out
allow for groups.

- "de-mix by MIDI note" function. i.e. to turn the drum sequence you
recorded on a single track/channel to a multi-track one (one sound/one
track).

2.0 has an explode tracks feature. Take a look at page 14 of the 2.0 PDF
manual

I already know about that 2.0 function. the problem is that it works
exploding the track by MIDI channels, not MIDI notes.
thanks anyway

thanks for the advice. the new loop function is a great addendum but I was
asking about something different.
I don't want my song to be stuck on a 1 bar loop while I reprogram a drum
part in grid mode. I'd like to be able to move between measures
indipendently by the song reproduction point.
like the Korg Electribes sequencer, for example, that covers this function
perfectly.

>- possibility of entering gate values higher than 100% when in Grid

>
> >>>For what purpose? <<<

- legato synth programming directly in grid mode.
- more accurate drum programming. just an example: I usually set the
release of my (Akai S5000) drum samples very short, so I can perfectly
control the lenght of the samples via the lenght of the midi note on the
sequencer track. with the MP7 gate time limit to 100% (so a 16th as maximum
lenght) a crash hit (naturally spanning a couple of beats) becomes just a
"tch-"... does it make sense? :)

>- "jumping" between windows made easier, important especially for live

>
> >>>It's pretty quick now IMO, I use it live too. <<<

it still requires lot of page scrolling.
IMO the ergonomics of the OS layout could have been a little bit better.

>
> >>>This is in the addendum too, it'called Explode/Combine Clipboard. <<<

as I already pointed out, this function doesn't work on MIDI notes on the
same MIDI channel.
it just separates tracks depending on their MIDI channels. that's not what
I'm looking for.
a workaround would be to be able to "cut to clipboard" just a specified
range of notes and then copying them to another track, but it doesn't seem
to be possibile... or am I wrong?
I guess I'll keep using E-loader and Logic for this...

anyway, I'm really enojoying my MP7, even if I have to change my production
habits a little bit to adapt to the Command Station OS peculiarities. very
inspiring piece of kit. I sold my MPC to buy this one and I don't reget the
choice at all...
thanks
