Yamaha CS80

Hi all.

I just finished installing a Kenton MIDI kit in a group member's CS80.
 Do not try this unless you're very comfortable hacking around inside
these things!

I went slowly, taking a lot of pictures on the way.  I'll set up a web
site soon, but Scott, the owner, has been bloging the install here:

It all worked the first time, and I've got it hooked up to my
MIDIBoard.  I'm starting to get the hang of the set-up mode and got it
to responds to poly aftertouch.  One thing I don't understand is the
program change.  Sending MIDI program changes from 1 through 14 goes
through all the presets for tone I.  I can't figure out how to change
the presets for tone II.  Can anyone who's used this give me a hand?

  If you happen to do another MIDI retrofit for someone's CS-80, please give them the option of selecting where they want that red MIDI button to go.  I have regretted putting mine in the same spot where you drilled Scott's, especially when I discovered there was enough wiring to place the button in a less conspicuous place in the back panel next to the midi ports. It would have preserved the original cosmetic appearance of the machine.   I laughed at the comments in the blog about that drill, but felt a twinge of regret, too. (Seeing that picture on the web brought back long-buried anxieties.       )

Good point, although I would probably mount it in on the front in
order to be able to get to the red button and the toggle switch.  I
could see trying to find switches that are nicer and/or match the
other controls better.  

Can you answer my question about the MIDI program change controlling
the tone II presets?

I forgot to answer you on that, David, I don't know how to get to the second row of presets. Unless you change the bank on the controller. Is Kenton any help with this? Did you also hear of the MIDI kit that will offer PolyAT transmit via MIDI from the CS? That would be awesome.
   
  On another note I read someone's comment about the MIDI making the CS sound really sterile, but I think it adds a wonderful analogue phatness to the sound when other keyboards are midi'ed together.

Sure, ask Kenton :^)   Ok, I did, and I got the answer and tried it
out.  Program changes 1-14 select the sound for tone I.  Program
changes 17-30 select the sound for tone II.  It makes it a little
strange to program from a master keyboard or sequencer since you have
to send two program changes for a single channel.

I also got an answer to my question about the CS80 being left in a
weird state (hung notes, portamento on) after playing/stopping a MIDI
file on my PC driving the CS80:

Kenton:
Yes it responds to all notes off (CC#123) and reset all controllers
(CC#121) messages (which will reset sustain and portamento amongst
other things).
