Yamaha CS80

I'm about to get on the road to tour my album- and I used my cs-80 for 
lush pads and a bit of spacey high motifs. Can anyone recommend a synth 
to take- I've had a  Roland JD-800 recommended for reliability.????? My

Do you have Midi on your CS80?  If not you can still do this.. 

I would get a EMU E6400 Hardware sampler.. Or use a Software sampler on a Laptop.

You would get a program from Redmattica which is called Autosample.  It will sample your CS80 Via midi, and create a usable patch automatically with different velocities, and aftertouch for use in Logics EXS file format.  You can convert that to any other format as well.

The software is easy to run.  You select the Keys you want to sample.  So 2 notes every octave, then you can choose the velocities, aftertouch etc.  It will automatically go down the list, save the wav's to file, normalize them, and auto adjust the recording input if something is clipping.  If you don't have midi, you can trigger the cs80 manualy, and then go step by step with the software so it knows you are moving on to the next key.

At the end of the day you are left with a perfect sound sampled instrument of your CS80.

You can take things even further with Redmattica's Keymap.  It will set loop points automatically for pads, and even render the crossfades.

Once I have a perfect patch in going from Autosample to Keymap  in EXS format, I use Chicken Sys's Translator Pro to create a EOS disc format to convert the EXS to EOS to be used on the EMU e6400.  I load up the samples via CD-Rom, and it stores them on the hard drive.


Or you could spend 2k on a Prophet 8, and another 600 bucks on a used Kurzweil Midiboard.  The Prophet 8 has poly aftertouch in, and the Kuzweil midiboard will give you the perfect controller that has poly aftertouch.  Throw a Chorus on there, and you will be ready as ever.  The Prophet 8 does a great job at the CS80 with it's 8 Voices that can be run in Unison, or even in stack mode so you trigger 2 voices per key.

The JD-800 is a great all around synth, and I often use the CS-80 and
CS-60 patches I've found (the Jean Michel Jarre ones are nice and the
"Vangelis" ones are also nice).

Just make sure your JD-800 has no keyboard issues. The two main ones
are aftertouch sensitivity (which can be fixed with a vari pot or
resister mod) and bad epoxy glue on some keyboards (which requires a
new keyboard). Mine had the former (which I fixed with the mod) and
does not have the latter.

JD's can be picked up on eBay for between $500-$800. You could also go
with the rackmount JD-990, but the JD-800 patches would have to be
converted using Gwydi's patch converter.

The sampling optioned also mentioned would be another good route to go.

JD800 would be a good choice imo. Or perhaps the rack version the JD990.
