Yamaha CS80

Happy New Year everyone!

Here's a challenge to start the year.  I was sorting out a of ton of
files on my PC and found some MIDIs of Eddie Jobson/UK.  I just
uploaded the files "Presto Vivace and Reprise.mp3" and "presto.mid" to
the Files/PRESTO page on Yahoo.  Someone did a lot of work creating
the MIDI file.  However, the sounds, especially the ones that are
supposed to be CS-80 (all the keyboard parts) are totally wrong.  The
mp3 file is what it really sounds like.

So, who can take the MIDI file and use the appropriate track to play a
MIDIed CS-80 or the CS80v software and get the sounds right to match
the mp3 file?  Of course, if you play really well you could record the
part live.  I'd love to hear what people come up with!  Any takers?

I have been lurking on this list for a while and feel it was time to start 
posting :)

Don't own a CS-80 yet, though I'm sure I will one day.
But recently got a CS-50 off ebay, and will have it in my posession later 
this week.
Was thinking about adding CV and gate inputs, or having them added since I'm 
not very experienced with a solder iron :)
Does anybody know someone in Holland that has experience in 
servicing/modding a Yamaha CS?
Beleive I read about a man doing this once but can't find it anymore.
Also does anybody know where I can find the CS-50 manual and perhaps also 
service manual, or is anybody willing to copy them? (will pay for this 
offcourse)

BTW I know an unbeleivably great CS-80 double album :) (if not the greatest 
of all times)

Selected Ambient Works volume II - Aphex Twin !
I'm 99% sure most of it is a CS-80. And some twisted samples run through 
what sounds like a VCS3?

No sir, not buying that Aphex Twin reference, unless it comes right from RDJ himself.  I'm willing to be proven wrong.  

Maybe my old ears are bad or I have been reading in the wrong places, but I've always heard SH-101, CZ-101, MS-20, TR-808, TR-606 and a variety of cheap delays and reverbs in his early stuff. 

Anyone got the truth on this?

An even less reliable source!

To the original poster... if you think that a CS sounds like a CZ-101
through a dying 
digitech reverb then I think that you are going to be pleasantly
surprised.

Enjoy your CS-50. My CS-50 gets constant use in both my studio and in my live rig.

Kenton still has CV/GATE kits for the CS series, though they are quite pricey:

You should give selected ambient works II a listen it is not at all 
like his music before or after. Defenately not a cz-101 and a 
digitech reverb hehe.
Really almost sure it's mostly cs-80 and a lexicon 224 reverb, some 
sound are very typical and i would know of no other way to make them 
than with a cs-80. It's the most organic record i've ever heard. The 
music that comes closest i think is Brian Eno's Ambient 4 - On land, 
but selected ambient works II goes much further where Eno left off 
imho.

Will contact them and will let you all know how the mod turns out.
Was thinking it would be nicer to add gates and v/hz cv and a cv for 
the aftertouch and an encore expressionist midi to cv instead of the 
expensive kenton kit. Not only for the costs but also because it's 
semi modular that way and i can hook it up to my other analogues or 
play it in unison, maybe figure out a way to do microtuning, and 
things like that :)
btw does anybody know a way to do microtuning in this setup? Is it 
possible through midi or is there a module from one of the modulars 
to process the cv's, or should i just bug encore electronics to 
implement this in their midi to cv converter?
If it's not possible by manipulating midi data in for instance 
cubase etc then i think a manufacturer of midi converters should be 
smart and implement this, would be the easyest place to implement 
it, and would do music a lot of good, all old analogs would have 
instant microtuning! Would be a giant spiritual leap forward for 
western music hehe ;)

I believe the Kenton mods are strictly midi and in this case don't give you 
anything but note in at least on the CS80.

I was interested in CV myself,  especially given the control capabilities of 
these synths, however my understanding is that is actually harder to modify 
for CV than for midi.  

Does anyone in fact have such a CV mod on CS80 or others?  I would be 
surprised.
