While we are discussing patch memory:

In the files section (under Tuning and Troubleshooting) I uploaded an
old add for the Microsine System. (microsinesystem_72.jpg)

Apparently it was designed to enhance patch memory. I have not been
able to find any information on this system on the web. Particularly I
am interested just how the system interfaced with the CS.

Do any of you guys know anything about it?

Cheers

This is bloody amazing! Where was I when this gadget came out?
So, you say you can't find anything on the web...Is the jpg you uploaded a scan of an advert you have in your possession?
Thanks for sharing this with the group! I'm curious, too, to know how this thing interfaced...
The display was "Neon Orange". What a trip!

Just recently, one of our members posted about this:

Apparently, he has a CS80 that used to have this installed, basically
tearing up much of the CS80's guts :(

Thanks, David, for supplying the answer to how the Microsyne interfaced...it makes you lose your appetite to see all those guts sprawled out like that. I remember the post, now, but never associated the two (microsyne and synthedata). Through searching on the web I found that Synthedata dissolved as a company on the 23rd of December 2002. It was on a site listing several other Canadian companies that had bit the dust.

Hi,

I have seen a system like that but forgot the name of the person that
still has one (obviously not a member of this list or I expect they
might have chimed in by now).

In my earlier post:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/yamahacs80/message/2178

I mentioned a note about adding patch memory. The basic notion with
any system like this is to use a reference voltage, sample the
potentiometer using an ADC and then store that as digital info in
memory. To recall a patch, you apply that to the DAC that controls
(and intercepts) the voltage levels of the "analog" patch memories.
The brute force way is to have a single DAC for each mini slide and
only *one* ADC to sample the sliders (treating them as a limited sort
of keyboard). You will need to use an embedded microcontroller to run
all of this, something like:

http://www.pmb.co.nz/cpu_1a1.htm

This uses a Basic language interpreter (instead of writing assembler)
and is plenty fast for this project. The costly part is wire-wrapping
the DAC boards and building the ADC scanner for the pots.

Cheers!

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
