selling Kurzweil MIDIBoard - poly aftertouch controller
2006-08-06 by David Rogoff
Hi all. After much thought, I've decided to sell my MIDIBoard. I got it as a light-weight replacement for my CS-80 :^) I was going to use it with cs80v, and it's works great with the demo version, but I want to go more portable (laptop + USB-powered keyboard), even though that means giving up the wonderful polyphonic aftertouch :( Most people interested in this already know about it, but here's a quick rundown: 88 wooden keys, great touch (bouncier than a piano), attack and release velocity response, assignable zones, buttons, sliders, pedal inputs, and, of course, polyphonic pressure/aftertouch. This is about the only keyboard ever built that is a good poly aftertouch MIDI controller. The Roland A50 & A80 (I've owned both) had it, but the pressure response sucked (needed to use your thumb to press hard enough to get any response). The Prophet T-8 has great poly-touch response, but as someone just discovered in the group last week, it stupidly doesn't send it on the MIDI output! The CS-80 is king, but the Kenton MIDI add-on doesn't do MIDI out, just in! The SQ-80 (owned ones of these, too) had it, but felt like garbage and was extremely uneven/unusable. I think the only keyboard that could match the MIDIBoard was the later Synclaviers that used the same keyboard as the T-8, but one of those will probably run you over $10k. Ok, enough ranting. Here's a few links about it: http://www.synthony.com/vintage/midiboard.html http://www.kurzweilmusicsystems.com/support.html?Id=1638 (link to owner's manual pdf) Here's some pictures I took less than five minutes ago: http://www.therogoffs.com/midiboard/midiboard_1.jpg http://www.therogoffs.com/midiboard/midiboard-left.jpg http://www.therogoffs.com/midiboard/midiboard-center.jpg http://www.therogoffs.com/midiboard/midiboard-right.jpg The previous owner did play out with it, so it has one ding on the front edge, seen in the -right picture. Also, there's a few scuff on the front of 5 keys in the top octave, seen in the same pic. But otherwise it all works perfectly: keys, initial & after-touch, MIDI, wheels, buttons & sliders, etc. I haven't tried every single feature, but everything I have tried works. The plaque on the right says it's a Limited Edition, but I've never found out what that means. Based on the number of programmable parameters (42), it's the older firmware, but I don't think that's an issue for most people. I think the later ones added stuff like an arpeggiator, which would likely be available in whatever hardware or soft synth you'd be playing (e.g. CS80v). Asking $525 or reasonable offer. Someone is selling one on eBay right now with a buy-it-now of $1,125. I'd be willing to take that much if someone offers :^) It comes with the original owner's manual. I'd also be willing to throw in the adjustable piano stand it's on in the pictures. The keyboard is located in Irvine, CA. It's big and heavy (although I'm on the small side and have carried it up stairs by myself), so I'd really prefer a local buyer. If you're somewhere in SoCal I'm sure we can arrange to meet. I take PayPal or cash. I've got a perfect eBay rating of 227 (http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=david72hq&ssPageName=STRK:ME:UFS), and many more references from Internet deals going back over 15 years. If there's no interest within a week, I'll be putting it on eBay. Please let me know if you have any questions. Local people can arrange to come by and try it out.
