Are you sure it's ammonium pershulphate ? Never seen that...
I use sodium persulphate, the biggest advantage of which is that if you use
a suitable container (in my case a vertical glass etching tank) you can
actually see the board etch, so it only takes as long as it needs.
There are chemicals you can use to neutralise the used etchant before you
stick it down the drain.
Local regulations may vary widely.
