I second Colin's opinion. In the robotics and motion control stuff that I've
designed / worked on, IDC headers are definitely the way to go. If you get
them with locking latch 'ears' and gold plated pins, they are basically
bullet proof. Get a few extra pieces to practice with and use a vise to
crimp the connectors onto the ribbon cable nice and straight, rather than
crimping down one side and then the other. Also don't OVER compress (easy to
do with a vice).
