[sdiy] Opamp ICs (slightly OT)

Okay, so what about using two photoresistors and a phototransistor? (thinking 
each component can be switched on and off to affect the tone: the transistor 
would provide square wave output, the resistors more 'natural' output).  Is 
that a logical arrangement?
And schematic-wise, I guess it'd be a battery going into the resistor array, 
into an opamp (i have a LM386N on hand, will that work?) into the output jack?
Sorry for having so many dumb questions, but I'm anxious to get started and 
yet want to draw out a parts-list first (and yes, I know I'll need an LED as 
well).
