From some points of view, the 259e and 261e are somewhat similar:
they are both dual oscillators, they both have complex timbre
sections, they both have digital sine wave cores.

The 259e got a sort of bad reputation, early on, because of ailiasing
artifacts, but it is actually a pretty interesting sounding
oscillator. http://www.buchla.com/200e/259e.html - this is no longer
linked to from the main site

The only one currently made, the 261e, is a pretty close cousin to the
original 259, from the mid 1970s.

They are both interesting flavors. I think that the 261e is a little
more aggressive sounding.

First off, I would recommend that you get a case bigger than you need
right away. I don't know what the price difference is between an eight
space cabinet and the twelve space cabinet, but I would try and scrape
together the difference.

Second, there is no 225e in the above system. In addition to allowing
for MIDI control, the 225e is also responsible for saving & restoring
presets, and installing software updates. I think that it's really
crucial to have one of these.
