What to connect to the 210e?

What to connect to the 210e?

2008-11-03 by alt-mode

Hi,

I just rearranged my system into an 18 WLS from a bunch of 4 boat racks and
I would like to develop a basic set of routings through the 210e as patch
templates and for performance. The question is, what do you route through
the 210e to gain the maximum flexibility/functionality? I don¹t mind
overriding or adding additional patch cords for a particular setup but I¹d
like to have some basic routings stored.

What do you run through your 210e?

Hi Eric,

It changes from time to time, but here is mine:

Audio ins:

A: main 261e
B: mod 261e
C: main 259e
D: mod 259e
E: 266e noise (flat)
F,G,H: variable

Audio outs:

1: to 291e input A
2: to 291e input B
3: to 291e input C
4: to 292e channel 4
5: to 291e Mod input A or B or C

Channel A,B,C from the 291e go to the first 3 channels of the 292e,
then to the 227e.
Channel 4 of the 292e goes straight to channel 4 on the 227e.

CV ins:

A: 249e CV 1
B: 249e CV 2
C: 249e pls out.
D: 281e(1) env out.
E: 266e Qantized Random Voltages output C.
F: 222e ch 6 CV1 out
G: 222e ch 7 CV1 out
H: 222e ch 6 Loc out

CV outs:

1: 261e CV in
2: 259e CV in
3: 227e ch 1 spatial control in
4: 227e ch 2 spatial control in
5: varies.

this is a rough idea of what i do at the moment : i recently upgraded
from a 12 space case to an 18 with a 222e, so i am far from an ideal
routing standard....what you see here is a natural evolution of the
old routing.

There is also a lot of direct patching involved, most of the time,
which i am forced to write down in order to recreate later on, if needed.

I am also uploading a copy of a patch sheet i used early this year for
a concert i did at Berklee College of Music in Boston: the whole
concert was based on that routing and i developed the composition over
a series of different presets.

hope this helps,

A.

HI all

My 250e isnt working right. All lights are on ... i have saved presets
and try to recall any of them on the 225e, but nothing sounds right
because of the Arb Functions Gens lights are all an...I turned the 200e
on and off but the lights are always on when i turn on....

i think it's pretty unlikely that it's a faceplate wiring problem,
though it is worth checking. the connections in question are 8-pin (i
think) molex, near the edges of the pcb...

i seriously recommend trying to reload the firmware... trying it
several times, in fact. just because the LED's are unresponsive
doesn't mean it's not reading the RE switch on power-up.

try it:
- power down the system
- in sert the 250e firmware card, label facing up
- power up while holding down the 250e remote enable switch
- and give it a good 10 minutes. if it's working you should see the
blue LED on your 292e flickering brightly.

i don't understand what you're trying to show me with that photograph.
it seems to be a picture of the JTAG debugger connection to the MCU,
it shouldn't be connected to anything unless i'm reprogramming the
module.

man this blows I

ok, here's an alternate plan... give me your shipping address and i'll
send you my own 250e... meanwhile send yours to me in los angeles, NOT
to don:

1515 bates place
claremont CA 91711
USA

this is after double-checking the firmware loading, of course.

it'd be cool if you could arrange to pay for the shipping... if you
send it to don for service, he'll pay for his half, but you may wait
for months.

Hi Alessandro,

Thanks, yes this is very helpful. I find questions like this
interesting because it gives a view into what different users out
there consider to be patching priorities; sort of like learning how
different chefs set up their kitchens and where they put their knives
and utensils. ;)

Any other chefs want to share their 210e setups?

I'd be interested in your impressions of the 222e as well. I'm
setting up a Thunder controller to use with my 200e and, other than
the ring controllers, I wonder what I'm missing.

Thanks,
   Eric

Re: [200e] Re: What to connect to the 210e?

> Any other chefs want to share their 210e setups?

Since my focus in using the 200e is live performance in quad, I use
the audio side of the 210e as a programmable submixer for routing
signals to the four output channels and an effects chain. I have four
261es and one 259e in my system, and my standard approach is to treat
the 261s as a four-voice polyphonic synth under direct voltage control
by the Continuum and Continuum CVC (Control Voltage Converter). Each
261 is part of an identical voice path consisting of the 261, one
filter in a 291e (I have two, for a total of six filters), and one
gate in a 292e (I have two of those as well.) I have the Continuum
setup so that the X dimension controls pitch, the Y filter frequency
and/or 261 Timbre, and the Z controls amplitude and/or 261 Modulation
Index.

The 259 is part of a separate structure consisting of the 250e
controlling the 259 and triggering a 281e, which is controlling the
second 292. The 259 goes through a stage of the second 291e, then to
two gates in the 292 - a standard sequencer setup providing a fifth
voice. I also commonly use noise from the 266e as a sound source, so
there's a sixth signal path consisting of pink noise to the last 292
stage, then to the last two gates in the second 292.

I've been working on optimizing a single performance super-patch since
I got my system, and I'm always tweaking it and adding paths, but
here's the current setup:

210e Audio I/O

A-D in: 261e A-D signal chains (261e to 291e to 292e)
E in: 259e signal chain (259e to 291e to 292e)
F in: empty
G in: straight white noise
H in: pink noise signal path (noise to 291 to 292)

1-4 out: 227e Signal In 1-4
5 out: effects send

I have the fifth output of the 227 patched into an external Roland
RE-20 Space Echo simulator pedal; the outputs of that are patched back
into the system's 292 Infinite Phase Shifter. The outputs of the 297
are patched into the 227's Sub-mixer inputs; I can send the echo-phase
shifter path to either the front or rear speakers, or both, by re-
patching there. That way, I can send any of the various signal sources
in any proportion to the effects path by programming the 210 routing
and levels accordingly and selecting the appropriate preset.

210 CV I/O

A in: 266 Fluctuating Random Voltages A
B in: Fluctuating Random Voltages B
C in: Quantized Random Voltages C
D in: Quantized Random Voltages D
E in: Stored Random Voltages E
F in: 250e CV 2 Out
G in: empty
H in: empty

1-4 out: patched to the CV inputs on each 261's Modulation Oscillator
5: patched with stacked cables to 259 signal path's 291 filter
frequency CV in and 259 Mod Osc. CV in

I use the CV of the 210 matrix mainly for routing random control
voltages around to the Modulation Oscillators when working with FM
timbres, and for sending the secondary CV out from the 250 to a couple
of useful places. Again, I use the presets as a way to both
distribute, mix, and scale those CVs, so it's essentially a
programmable CV matrix mixer.

I hope that's clear.
