Re: [200e] Buchla Thunder II AT NAMM?

Yeah - its f'n outrageous. Now idea of price yet - says Don. But it have
both pressure and vertical position sensitivity like the Continuim
controller. The keys are laid out in the "Klingon battleship" format like
the first Thunder, yet it's a 200e module - it mounts into a boat and not a
stand alone like T 1.

It's a capacitance keyboard like all the others. White keys with laminate
over them, not metal keys. Over them, which makes the key outline is a
final laminated layer which is silver colored and pretty much matched the
metal of the other faceplates. Sounds hokey? It's not. It's very clean,
very sexy, looks great in the unit, is very easy to work with.

I can't go into all that much detail right now - I've got to get to Namm
myself, but along with the controller panel, there's a separate controller
module with it with many many outputs - the keys and the X/Y pads and
there's about an inch square cutout on this external module which exposes a
sensor to use Lightning type rings (different types - different sensing
capabilities, all worn on your finger like your wedding ring - as explained
by Yazi) that behave like the Lighning wands.

There's other comments I could make, but they are speculative - I haven't
asked the right questions so I'll wait until I do that to make any more
assertions about the system - and I'll post again.

The thing is amazing.

Re: [200e] Buchla Thunder II AT NAMM? - NO Thunder II

2006-01-20 by

for the sake of historic accuracy this is *NOT* Thunder II

Thunder II is/was a hand drum controller designed by Buchla for EMU back in the 90's .. it was never completed or produced.

This new controller is a 200e specific module and doesn't have internal power or MIDI, it is a CV/Pulse interface for the 200e modular system.

[200e] Buchla Thunder

2006-01-21 by Fred Weed

I've posted a picture of the 222e ("Thunder") on the group site. The
full name is "Mutli-Dimensional Kinesthetic Input Model 222e. It's 7"
high and 12 3/4" inches long (three Buchla spaces wide). Accompanying
it is the 222e output module (7" x 4 1/4", one space wide). I don't
have a picture of it, but I posted a picture of the 225e Midi decoder,
as the 222e resembles it - it has about 30 pulse and voltages outputs,
and a 2-line alphanumeric display with page and cursor buttons, and a
knob for entering data.

The input controller has a multitude of keys (see). All keys produce
both pressure and impact signals. The long keys add location signals.
The two hex-shaped keys at the outside provide two location voltages -
horizontal and vertical. In addition, keys may be assigned 1 or 2
preset control voltage outs. Pulses, pressure, location, impact, and
control voltages are all available simultaneously, and assigned to
various output with the U.I. on the output module.

The output module's user interface allows the user to assign pulses,
locations, pressures, impacts, and control voltages to the various
output jacks on the 222e output module.

Regards, Fred..

Thanks a lot Fred!

Do you know if the 222e can save it's own configurations
or is a 225e needed in the same cabinet?

Re: [200e] Buchla presets

2006-01-21 by

all 200e modules require the 225e to save the set ups with exception of the 249e DARF which can save 1 preset without the 225e

Re: Buchla Thunder

2006-01-22 by Gary Chang

Yes.... The new Buchla touch pad is excellent. Its programablity
allow most of the functions found on the preceding Kinestetic Input
ports - plenty of individual keys that can output pulse and preset
voltages when touched.

This really makes the 200e a complete system, akin to the 200 series
systems of the past.

Re: [200e] Re: Buchla Thunder

2006-01-22 by

I think the 222e exceeds the functionality of the old touchplates.. now there is polyphonic response rather then mono or psuedo-poly, the joysticks from the 219/221 are replaced by the 2 - 222es X/Y pads.. the only function missing in the side to side rocking motion sensor that made the 221 the " kinesthetic" Input port, of course this has been replaced by the lightning portion of the 222e.

I would agree that a touchsurface controller was the missing link between the 200e system and the classic buchla 200... and it was worth waiting for.
