Centronics Printer on CPU 68340

Centronics Printer on CPU 68340

2003-11-14 by Zeller, Joachim

Hello List,

I've to design an Board with a CPU 68340 and Centronics Interface for
printers.
Have anybody of you an idea how to realizing this.
The actual idea is to use a PIA to have enough I/O's.
Have you an idea which PIA can be used for this.
I've found a PIA in older Designs but this one isn't an actual product an will not be produced.
Are there some ohter possibilities with IC's to realize the Centronics interface.

Thanks to all who can help me.

Jo
:-)

The Centronics parallel interface is very easy to implement. One past
implementation for driving daisy wheel printers used the SGS/Thompson
or Hitachi 6821 PIA with some 74ls240 buffers. 74ls373 or 74ls374
latching buffers could also be used. Be aware there are various
handshaking protocols. Some are very easy and some are a pain to
implement but not all that difficult.

Be aware that you should not drive any line with 373 or 374 type
latches. These devices will interpret line reflections as instructions to
flip the state of the internal flip-flops. I know after shipping 5000
units with the defect. Always buffer with a 240 or equivalent to prevent
your output latches from being effected by the driven element (line and load).

Thanks. I have shipped several thousand units using 24x buffers but
did not know about the problem with 37x latches. It explains some
weirdness seen on some lab prototypes...
