AN EDITOR FOR LOGIC PRO 7 / MAC OSX

AN EDITOR FOR LOGIC PRO 7 / MAC OSX

2006-07-03 by digitaldisko

Hello,

I just recently purchased a MAC G5 (not the Intel one) and Logic Pro
7.2. I own a AN200 synthesizer and I want to be able to use one of
the editing programs, preferably the AN1x Editor made by Gary Gregson
or the AN200 Editor, to be able to program my AN200 more
easily..considering there are ALOT of parameters on the AN200 that you
can't even change without the software! I don't want to use the
classic version OS or get the Windows Software for a Mac. I would
like to be able to create voices on my AN200 through an editor program
interface while recording music in Logic Pro 7.2. Is this possible?
If so where can I download the software from? Thanks guys, I could
really use some help.

I have been upset by Yamaha's Mac support to say the least. They have
decent OS X support of more recent product but the PLG board is an
orphan...they are still selling it but seem top have no plans to update
the software.

The AN1X Editor is Windows only, the Yamaha editors for the PLG150-AN
and AN200 were never ported to OS X (OS 9 only) and there is no other
editor I am aware of.

So you're more or less out of luck.

I gave up and bought a $400 Toshiba laptop just so I could run the PLG
editor (my other computers are Macs running OS X)...pathetic but it was
that or no editing at all. The editors don't require much horsepower so
almost any cheap Windows machine will work, I paid a few extra $$$ for
a brand new machine rather than roll the dice on a used one.

You will not be able to run AN1xEdit (or AN200 Editor) under OS X without Classic and
OMS - that's just the way it is - there are no native version of either applicationt.

The OS X native, *beta* version of SoundDiver has an AN1x module, but I've had difficutly
performing bulk dumps too the AN1x from the beta SD. Haven't yet found anybody who
can report differently and I've not spent much more time troubleshooting as of late.

Yes, you may use a Logic Environment for this. There are user created, dedicated
environments for the AN1x, PLG150-AN and AN200 in the files section of AN1x-list here
at Yahoo! Groups.

You will find the Logic environments for download here:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/AN1x-list/files/

Shout out if you need a hand. I've not tried the AN200 environment, but I'd be happy to
give it a go as time permits.

This is incorrect. AN1xEdit was ported to OS 9 _years_ ago and works well to this day
within Classic under OS X. Both the PLG150-AN Editor and AN200 Editor (functionaly
identical, for the most part) also work within Classic under OS X. You do need to install
OMS under Classic and you must have a USB MIDI Interface that has a USB driver supported
under OS 9 for this to work. I've used both an Emagic MT4 and MIDIMAN UNO successfully
for this.

There is a *beta* of SoundDiver native to OS X, but I've found SysEx dumps too the AN1x
unreliable (see previous threads.) There is an OS X native version of Sound Quest too, and
there is a demo for download, but I did not feel it was cost effective for me as I've so few
hardware synths/samplers at this point.

That's a workable solution too!

You might want to check into older tablets rather than laptops.
Programming patches in unisyn/sd/an1xedit is a little more fun with a pen.

Thanks guys for the quick response. I guess i'm kind of out of luck for an AN Editor while
using Logic, for right now. I'll check in later to see if things have changed but the future
looks grim for Mac OSX's and a new AN Editor.

Thanks again,

Did you TRY the AN200 Logic Environment? It would seem to meet your requirements...

What's that? Will it work with OSX 10.4.6 and Logic Pro 7? If so, where can I download it
from? Is it a gooey (spelling?) platform where you can edit each parameter, such as "Pulse
Width"? That would be awesome if it did!

Thanks,

Scott

Oh, I see that you can download the AN200 Logic Enviornment under the Files/Logic folder
here, but it says "Logic 5.5 Environment for An200". Is there a newer version that will work
with Logic Pro 7.2 or will this download work fine in the newer version?

For the most part, Environment layers are forward compatible in Logic Audio.

Hi !
i can't understand , there's something wrong somewhere ..
You have instruments with a lot of knobs and switches to tailor your own
sound with your little hands but you are so addicted to computers that
you want a software to do that ? :-P
Sure, you can store a lot of patches in your PC or Mac , much more than
in the synth itself. But what you only need is something to store these
patches and download them in your keyboard at will , right ?
Cheers

There is nothing wrong, I'm uncertain what you don't understand but perhaps this will
help.

He is looking for a front end to his AN200 that will allow him to program and automate
playback of parameters beyond what is permitted from the front panel while running his
DAW simultaneously. The Logic Environment under discussion allows just that. The
AN200, like many low cost instruments, offers far more depth of programability beyond
what is accessible from the front panel. This is a trend in product design that dates back
to the late 80's with the Lexicon LXP series, Boss SE series, etc. Since the choice of editor/
librians for the AN series that run *native* in OS X *without using Classic* is limited, it was
suggested he try the AN200 Environment for Logic Audio which he indicated is his DAW of
choice.

There is no need for you to be condescending - you have little to no insight into his
recording habits to make such a rude statement.

That's over simplifying the situation. Yes, he can perform a Bulk Dump from his AN200 to
his sequencer and store AN200 Voices, but as explained - he is looking for an Editor to
run concurrent with his DAW.

I jus put up a copy of the AN200 Environment and it is more limited than I thought. Try the
PLG150-AN instead.

OK Jon ... i see ! Didn't know this detail, i thought that an AN200 was
"half an AN1X without keyboard" .
And don't matter about "rude statements" i was joking .

There's an awful lot you can NOT reach without the soft editor. It's due
to the nature of the PLG150-AN board itself. The same restrictions apply
to anyone trying to edit AN patches from a Motif, CS6x, S90, etc. I felt
there was so much power being lost by not being able to deep edit that I
bought a cheap laptop to dedicate to the editor!

Wow! I just opened up the "plg150an Logic Editor" and it is amazing looking. It seems like it
has everything I need...to bad the AN200 didn't come with all of these features without using
a software. Has anybody ever used this software in Logic? How do I play my AN200 in this
logic session via the editor and how do I change the parameters to my AN200 Hardware?

Thanks everybody for the great feedback

It is nice, but be aware that many of the controls transmit SysEx - not MIDI CC's - so real
time update, i.e., tweaks while recording, will eat up more of your MIDI bandwidth than
MIDI CC's.

The AN1x environment uses MIDI CC but you may have to remap some of the knobs and/
or faders to the correct MIDI CC values for the PLG50-AN - I don't recall how drastic the
difference is between the MIDI CC values for an AN1x vs. a PLG150-AN (AN200) in this
regards, it's been awhile since I've fooled with it.

> It seems like it
> has everything I need...to bad the AN200 didn't come with all of these features without
using  a software.

That is the trade off you made when you chose a low cost synthesizer like the AN200 as
opposed to something with a more immediate interface - and a price tag to match. You
might find that you do not enjoy editing your hardware from a software front end and
chose another direction. Many users find the compromise between cost and functionality
workable and don't mind.

> Has anybody ever used this software in Logic? How do I play my AN200 in this
> logic session via the editor and how do I change the parameters to my AN200 Hardware?

The first thing you need to do is import the plg150an environment into Logic.

Once you have it open, navigate to the plg150an Arrange page and update the Port to
match the MIDI port of the MIDI Interface from which you have the AN200 connected.

Now toggle back to the plg150an Environment page and update a parameter from a fader
or knob - I would suggest something simple at first like Filter Cutoff from the VCF module.

Does your AN200 respond correctly? If so then you are good to go - otherwise something
is amiss wih the Port setting - double check the Port and make certain the Cha setting
matches the MIDI Transmit & Receive channels on your AN200.

Post back and let me know how it goes.

If you need help importing this environment into an existing or new Logic song, let me
know *offline* (because it's too involved and too off topic to bore AN1x-list with) and I'll
try to help.
