Is there a difference in the A/D converters between the AN1x and the Motif ES series to make a real difference in the sound of same patch? My bandmates tell me that the Motif sounds "warmer". But, my pseudo- experiment seems to indicate the contrary. I have downloaded the same An1x raw, single scene, uneffected pulse wave patch into the PLG150AN and found it to sound actually a bit thinner on the Motif. What gives? Am I missing something? TIA aL

Motif or Motif ES? Could the Motif have had any Master Effects (not sure if the original Motif has Master Effects like the ES) altering the sound? I do not have an AN1X but I have the PLG150AN. I have used this card in both my CS6X and Motif ES and find the ES to sound better, IMHO. Is there a reason this is a curiousity? Are you thinking of replacing your AN1X with the AN cards? It's the motif ES7, and I made sure the master effects are off also. The reason for this inquiry is the one you guessed. I have both the An1x and the PLG150An, and although the An1x is my board of choice, the guys in the band are really pushing for the Motif ES. I use the Motif ES almost strictly for lead sounds, and the An1x does these sounds so well, but it's almost a third of the ES7's weight, so, that's why I gravitate to the An1x!! aL There is 1 message in this issue. Hello ! >I do not have an AN1X but I have the PLG150AN. I have used this card >in both my CS6X and Motif ES and find the ES to sound better, IMHO. > It's a matter of fact that the "real world" is analog , not digital . Maybe your ES keyboard has better D/A converters , or a better output stage ? Even if 95% of the keyboard electronics are digital you must convert the data into an analog signal , amplify it and/or adapt the output impedance ... and this could be more "tricky" than generating waveforms and filtering them with a DSP . To take some examples , some speakers could sound better than others with your amp, whatever their price , size or anything else . There is a "tube revival" both in instruments or HiFi amplification , and however , on a purely electronic point of view , tube amps are not outstanding compared to solid state electronics (frequency response, rise time, signal/noise ratio ...). @+ J.F. hemmer12000 a \ufffdcrit : >Motif or Motif ES? > >Could the Motif have had any Master Effects (not sure if the original >Motif has Master Effects like the ES) altering the sound? > >I do not have an AN1X but I have the PLG150AN. Sod my bandmates? That would leave me no band!! ;) Well, really, the bandmates are just a sanity check. --- In AN1x-list@yahoogroups.com, Peter Korsten <peter@...> wrote: > > Albert Ibrahim schreef: > > > It's the motif ES7, and I made sure the master effects are off also. I agree with Peter in that you ought to keep the AN1X. However, sometimes it's fun to be a follower in that most of those who WANT to be a leader mess things up so badly! You get to sit back and snicker! Here's a question though... What the hell kind of audio microscope are your bandmates using? Really, once in the mix, the sound is the sound. Most listeners won't bother thinking "if he'd only used the PLG150AN card through a Motif ES..". Really! I remember a band I was in a LONG time ago and having the drummer and bass scrutinize my synth sounds....F-off you Rhythm Primates! (the drummer went on to be the lead singer of the Dandy Warhols...I guess I suck) FYI - I have played bass in half the bands I've been in - respect to Bass Players....it's just, you better have an American Fender P-bass, an SWR amp and Sun 8x10 if you want to be in my band because "it's warmer". The other band members probably prefer the Motif just because that's what they see on TV all the time. I sort of go through this in my band, they'd probably love for me to get a Nord Electro. Yeah, well, while it has better Hammond and Wurly sounds, it won't cover the Badass Combo Organ sound like Annie Blue (my An1x) can. Now if I could just get that Fender Blues Junior I want to *really* trash it out. "Egun On, Lagunak!" (Basque for G'day Mates) Pete Nalda

Here's the deal: live in a crowded bar you won't hear a lot of difference between the AN1X, the PLG 150AN within the Motif, and a mini moog. The real issue is you and the band. The answer is to let the band know you prefer to lug something light to gigs and if that's a problem, discuss it. Perhaps someone can help you lug equipment? If it comes down to weight or band cohesiveness, I pick band. Jimmy PS I just covered the back of my AN1X with flourescent pink and green duct tape. It looks very stylish now.

Even if you do get the Motif, keep the AN. It's a lot easier than using the PLG card from within the Motif. I just traded my two AN cards for an AN1X. I found it very tedious to always need software to turn off an arp if I liked a preset patch sound. Also, on the AN1X, you edit a sound...you hit store and confirm. On the PLG card, you edit a sound via software and must store it as a file on the host synth. If you don't, it's gone. Then, you must either "AUTOLD" it or manually load it back the next time you boot the synth. After having the AN1X for a few days, my opinion of Yamaha's AN technology has increased. Basically, I like the sound of the AN1X better than the AN cards regardless of its host. The Motif ES is a fantastic board though. If you can swing getting it and keeping the 1X, that would be ideal. --- In AN1x-list@yahoogroups.com, Albert Ibrahim <fai31188@...> wrote: > > It's the motif ES7, and I made sure the master effects are off also. Oh, I definitely intend to keep my An1x. It's a great board. I just don't have a lot of time to really learn how to program it, so for me the plg150an within the motif is a good alternative for the time being. In one sense, I find basic editing of the plug in voices easier than on the AN1x. That's probably due in part to my inexperience with synth programming...
At any rate, the An1x isn't going anywhere.

Hi all I just got a CS6x with a PLG150AN board and I am a little peturbed I can not access many parameters including arps without a PC (I am just re-setting up my studio and don't have the PC setup yet). Has anyone tried using somthing like a Peavey 1600x fader unit, programmed to access the parameters not accessible from the front panel? Bob El Segundo, CA -----Original Message-----
