Anyone else going for "Progressive Rock" sounds?

Anyone else going for "Progressive Rock" sounds?

2001-10-26 by carlk@hartsystems.com

I have the AN200 (couldn't hold out for the AN1X), but I'm still
quite happy.

I've been playing with this toy almost every day and I have found
lots of great sounds just by tweaking the knobs (haven't installed
the software yet).

I'm very heavy into prog rock (think Keith Emerson) and that is my
primary target for sound creation. So far the AN200 has not
dissapointed me (and remember, I still haven't used the software
yet!).

Here's the thing, I know that this unit was marketed
toward "Trance/Hip Hop/Dance" musicians.

So, am I the only one here putting this thing to uses "other" than
those it was designed for?

Also, I am completely ignoring the sequencing and drum machine
abilities of this device. I don't have a use for either (at least
not in the form that they are presented in on the AN200).

I would love to hear what other prog rockers have to say!

You are not alone. I am not doing any prog rock type stuff, though I can
enjoy it once in a while (in the stylings of Kevin Gilbert)...have you heard
"Spock's Beard"? Anyway...

I am primarily looking at sounds for pop/80s/electronic (mixed in with
rock...not the electronica that's poular now - Think: "Blinded me with
Science"), etc...

I have no examples to offer you at the moment, as none of my tunes has
actually included the plg150-AN yet. I am doing a cover tune of Roger
Taylor's (Queen's drummer) from his solo album in 1987-ish called "Killing
Time"...big synth orchestra thingy in the middle...sweet. Lots of loopbacks
to do this one right.

Hi Carl,

"...this unit was marketed toward "Trance/Hip Hop/Dance" musicians"

Don't ya just love those marketing types?!!!

When one considers Techno/Trance/HipHop/Dance strongly relies on the
analogue synthesis methods dating before 1980, I think one can safely
disregard the (sometimes embarrassing) marketing of today's synths. Really
not too much has changed in synth design since.

Speaking of Keith Emerson... at work (TV station) we dragged out the 1980
ELP clip of "Fanfare For The Common Man", performed live in an empty and
very snowy Moscow Olympic Stadium. 11 mins of pure adrenaline. Fantastic
stuff!!!

From what I've seen, this list has a larger percentage of non-techno
musicians than many other synths. What are some of the other modern synths
favoured by prog-rock?

Having said that, I'm more the techno/trance producing type, but appreciate
most musical styles that delve deeper than your typical radio-friendly 3
minute single.

I use all my keyboards primarily for progressive rock sounds.

Do some new age type stuff too and jazz piano and real Hammond.

I have found the moog type sounds to be incredible. Up to this time, the
only thing I would use if not a real Mini-Moog was a Kawai K-3 that I spent
hours (days actually) programming and tweaking. The AN1X is so good at this,
I wonder if I still need the K3. Not planning on selling it though....so
don't ask;-)!

I would like to add that some nice mellotron string sounds can be made with
the CS2X (even though this is OT concerning this particular list...LOL!)

Well it is my married name and yes it is my real name....
and I don't have a daughter or even a dog named Terra..LOL

Prog rock:
Yes, ELP, Tull, FLower Kings, etc.. etc..

Symphonic rock is it too, although there are many sub-genres of progressive rock. Guess I like the
symph-prog the best myself.

The K3 was my first Synth. I loved that keyboard - should never have
sold it! But, of course I wanted the money for something 'better'
that's longs since been and gone :-( Sooner or later I'll pop for
another K3 simply for nostalgia's sake if for no practical reasons ;-)

My first real synth was the Univox Mini-Korg K-1. And, since I still
have it, it still is.

I just sold my second "real" synth, Moog Rogue to pay for the Yamaha
AN200 (as it happens). I don't regret anything. =)

Carl,

I don't know if they ever sold it under the Univox label, but the Mini-Korg
was made by Keio Labs of Japan; i.e., KORG, Ltd. (Hence, the name.) The
second KORG synth was called the Maxi-Korg, and was basically two
Mini-Korgs in one case, just like the DX5 vs. DX7. The Mini-Korg was my
first synth, too -- although the minimal adjustments on it make it not
quite a "real synth" in my book. The first "real synth" I ever owned was
a Yamaha CS-10.

Hi Bastiaan,

Progressive rock has been defined in a number of ways. One excellent way is
hearing it for yourself. One well known page is:
http://www.gepr.net/

On my band's MP3 site, the song "Welcome" fits the genre pretty well. Our
next CD will be mostly progressive.

Re: [AN1x-list] Anyone else going for "Progressive Rock" sounds?

2001-10-26 by Bruce Wahler

I can't really call myself a "progressive rocker" -- although I do enjoy
the genre. That said, I tend to use my AN1x for more "classic" analog
synth sounds like the bands of the 70's and 80's used. I've been playing
synths since the early seventies, and that's where my roots are, I
guess. I like Trance and Hip Hop; I just don't find myself playing much of
it on stage.

The AN-series are great copies of the fundamentals of a classic analog
synthesizer -- which is exactly the sound used by both progressive rock and
dance/groove-oriented music. Since progressive rock isn't all the popular
these days, though, the marketing folks at Yamaha probably decided to focus
on the newer, hotter markets in their advertising. Nevertheless, show me a
musical instrument that a) was "made for hip hop" and b) has a 3.5-octave
or better full-size keyboard, and I can tweak it to make it suitable for
any other synth genre, too.

-BW

Hey you don´t need a CS2x for that, recently i stumbled over a very
nice Mellotron patch for the AN1x. I think it was in

I have that patch. It is ok, but not great IMO, compared to what else I have
for this sound.
Still better than nothing.

Linda,
I'm far from being any kind of Mellotron expert (Moody Blues anybody?)
but, there is a VSTi called M-Tron which is reputed to be a fair
Mellotron knock-off. I've not yet tried it myself. If you use a VST
capable MIDI/Audio sequencer you might want to check it out:

here are some user reviews too:

The Alesis keys and modules have a wave called "Tape String" that in of
itself is a little too strident, but mixed with stock strings makes a
killer Mellotron. I use an S4, but I think many of the others have the
same wave. My band does a couple of tunes that spotlight the Mellotron,
and the S4 comes through nicely.
