Yeah I'd agree with you there Jon- Another total bargain is "CellSynth"- only
$95- It's a reaktor-like monosynth- (I should add, only for the Mac at
present). It's very stable, it's shareware, it's fuckin' incredible!!- If you
don't already know.

www.cellsynth.co.uk

The FM7 is of course availible on both platforms- and like absynth it's got a
sound of it's own- (although I've only played with the demo)......Could it
replace the AN1x????

I have not yet tried CellSynth I'm sorry to say. Must put it on the list
of things to do.

Have you tried iSynth yet? http://www.eowave.com/index2.htm
Another one I haven't made my way around to.

I've been really happy with the latest freeware from BigTick -
Cheeeze Synth and TickyClav - along with the Emagic ES1 I
bought in June. Plus, I have some new Sample CDs so I'm not
hurting for new sounds ;-)

I don't feel Absynth (now cross platform too) would make a good
replacement for 'imitation analog' such as the AN1x. If you're in
the market for MW XT/Wavestation/K5000/FIZMO type of
weirdness then Absynth is an excellent addition but not as a total
substitute for something else. The next update is *suppose* to
be out in about a month but I'll believe it when I see it, ya know?

FM is basically hard to program. There's not much you can do about that. The
FS1r has the added disadvantage that it's a *really* deep and complex synth.
Then again, there are loads of specific FS1r patches to be had, and loads of
loads of DX7 patches that you can use as well.

The FS1r is a very unique synth, standing out in today's muddle of virtual
analogue and sample-based synths.

Opinions will vary on which one is better (a bit like "apples are better
than oranges", really), but feature-wise they all outperform the AN1x.
Especially the Virus is much loved, and would be my investment if I weren't
more interested in styling my car. :)

> i really would like to know something more about the physical

Physical modelling is nice, but it has it's limitations. Usually, you have a
rather limited polyphony. The sound you get is phenomenal, but to get a
realistic sounding saxophone (to name a popular example), you need a wind
controller like a Yamaha WX5.

If you're really interested in physical modelling, soft synths are your best
bet at the moment. The last hardware effort was the Yamaha EX5, and that
wasn't a very successful one (I know, I have one :) ). There was the Korg
Z1 - very nice, but arguably not as good as Yamaha's VL technology - and you
can get the Yamaha VL70m, and some plug-in boards from Yamaha and for Korg's
Triton series. None of this technology is younger than five years.

To answer your original question, it really depends on what you're looking
for. Do you want lots of polyphony? Lots of programmability? Unique sounds?

The FM-7 softsynth really is nice sounding.... it may make a good
alternative.

LOL! At least you have interests other than synths! What kind of
car? What are you doing to it? ;-)

I've never been fond of programming the AN1x using the hardware
interface. The software editor helps, but since adding the Nova and
Virus b to the studio I have not done any AN1x programming. The other
two synths are so much more fun to work with (IMHO).

Each of the synths has it's own unique sounds. The AN1x is very
unique and I really like hearing it used in a track. It's a special
sound. The same goes for the Virus b. It has it's own sound that you
can often pick out in a mix. They seem to have personalities in the
same way the vintage analogs did.

The Nova is a little less unique that way (but I still love it). The
Waldorf XT also has a very unique set of sounds. If you are not
looking for another VA then it may be very interesting to you.

Hey..... watch it! The EX5 is not what it was advertised to be, but
it has it's own special personality (and sound) and one of the best
user support groups available for any synth. ;-)

By the way Jon.... Musicians Friend finally shipped the last 100 OB-
12s today. I look forward to that cool interface. It's been a long
wait.

what soft synth synth do you mean is good for physical modeling?

Agreed. It's scary how many DX series patchesare available on
the 'net - and FM7 will read the SysEx for just about every DX
instrument Yamaha made. But what really gets my goat is all the
cool enhancements to the Envelopes and Sync options that
made it into FM7 that Absynth should have in the next update.
The Mac -> Win port and overhaul of Absynth was a necessary
evil but I'm ready for that update ;-)

Little things, and I'm still looking around. I just ordered the service and
repair manual from Amazon UK. Changing the colour of the side indicators,
some optical styling, that sort of thing.

Interestingly enough, this car can have a "software upgrade" that let's you
get some extra power from the engine. I wonder if the on-board computer has
a few spare cycles to play nice, relaxing background music. :)

The car, incidentally, is a Renault Sc\ufffdnic. It's a family car, with standard
connection points for child seats, a little refrigerator for three cans, and
a comfort level that rivals your sofa. And yet, it can be made to look
pretty sporty. As long as I don't have to put in those child seats. :)

Oddly enough, I would never even customise one of my synthesisers.

No problem! I'll supply the beer.. but, you have to inform my wife
about it! ;-)

Kidding aside.... lets do have a hands-on listening party at my
studio.... That would be fun!

Ok, I ran it by the wife and it's only going to cost me new wooden
blinds in the kitchen and family rooms. :-)

So, we'll have to work out a date and time... Will need to keep it to
only a few people, but it should be fun!

No spanking of keyboards or cats allowed!!!! ;-)
