Hello folks,

I´m proud to announce the purchase of an AN1x.

Got it on Ebay Germany for 350 €. And it arrived allready yesterday
at my home.

Sadly I have to work today and tomorrow.

SO I will try it the next days.

But I have some questions :

When I power it on it shows the in the screen " Battery low" - what
does this mean?
Is there any chance to get a german manual? Can someone maybe send me
a copy or give me a download link?

Any tips and help for a newbie will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Stephan

Peace and harmony are worth to live and work for

Congratulations on your purchase!

It means that the lithium battery that backs up the saved patches is running out of power. I believe that this battery is soldered in, so unless you are very good with electronics, you may need to send it into the shop. Otherwise, you will soon find that you have to reload the patches every time you power up!

Do you have any manual? If you cannot find a German manual, I have the English one on my website --

Hello Bruce,

1) I hope it will not be a big issue to solve the battery problem.
Since I don´t know the dealer and his ebay-behavior. And I´m not well
trained in electronics.

I will see on monday, when I´m back home from work.

2) I already recieved a download link from a german guy for the
manual.

So thank you very much.

FWIW, backup batteries are typically good for about 5-8 years, depending on playing frequency (the less the synth is powered on, the more the battery is drained), the storage temperature, and other factors. If the AN1x is five or more years old -- and it probably is -- then replacing the battery is not unexpected. I do think that the dealer should have let you know that this was the case, but I don't think it's worth cancelling the sale or anything. Almost any AN1x purchased today could be a candidate for battery replacement within a few months.

Replacing the battery is a very simple task for a repair tech to perform. It shouldn't cost more than an hour of repair time, plus the cost of the battery ($3-5US).

What about the state when the synth is "Off" but connected to power... ?
Does it usually use the battery at this moment ?

Hi Ray,

I've never studied the circuit in the AN1x, but the most likely answer is yes, it uses battery power when plugged in and powered off. Usually, there is a little circuit to keep the memory alive that basically says, "If I don't see some voltage here, I'm going to take some from the battery." A smarter way would be to take some from the AC adapter and THEN the battery, but it costs more money to do it that way, so most manufacturers do it the simple way.

Hi Bruce,
My tech 2\ufffd here: I think I've seen schematics that provide a trickle
charge to the lithium battery when AC is on. I thought this was a pretty
common practice - just give the battery 3VDC from the power circuit while
the unit is on and the battery gets charged... but that may have been a
unique design.

There are circuits that provide a trickle of current to the memory, not the battery Lithium batteries like the one that is in the AN1x -- as opposed to the Lithium-ion batteries in laptops -- will EXPLODE if charged. (I've seen one go off in a lab: It tore the top of a PC off like a giant can opener!) However, there are additional complexities (design and safety) to providing current to the memory using an external power supply, so many manufacturers don't bother. I have no idea how the AN1x is set up, so the safer assumption is that it doesn't provide this feature.

Hello,
I really can't believe that Yamaha would solder the battery in place on
a board as recent as this... But, let us know what you find when you
check it out... I'm curious as I may have to do the same job anytime
now... Mine has (as far as I know) never been changed...
You're going to love this board once you get to grips with it... Really
a nice piece of work and just generally fun to play. Yamaha did a
particularly nice job on this keyboard. Really surprised the hell out
of me... I'd advise you to get real familiar with the EQ, though... I
have already found that often it makes or breaks a patch. I don't think
it can be bypassed either. Anybody know for sure?

You can download the manuals from the Yamaha Website, in German (and other
languages). They are in Adobe Acrobat format (pdf). Just visit
http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/german/menu.html.

Is there any chance to get a german manual? Can someone maybe send me
a copy or give me a download link?

Not sure about bypassing the EQ, but I have rigged up my control freak to
control it and that works much better than messing around in the edit mx. I
agree it is a patch maker.
