Where can I legally buy pot? (No, not what you think :))

Where can I legally buy pot? (No, not what you think :))

Haha, got your attention I can't resist...Nonono, not the weed, folks,
I'm looking for a *potentiometer* part for my AN1x...my "Knob 4" pot
is going crazy...Everytime I turn my AN1x on, the "Knob 4" control
pops up on the LCD and the values go haywire (alternate quickly
between random values). Doesn't bode well when "Knob 4" controls some
parameter.

I think the pot got busted when I used to transport my AN1x in an old
keyboard case and the foam wall pushed into Knob4. Anyway, I've opened
up the AN1x before and I've come to the conclusion that the Knob4
potentiometer needs to be replaced. So where can I buy this part from?
Does Yamaha still sell them? Or do I have to buy it from someone with
a broken AN1x (or CS1x/CS6x)? Has anyone had this problem before.

Please no stoner jokes, I'm serious, I need to find this replacement part.

Isn't that a data knob, rather than a potentiometer?
I remember reading something about replacing data knobs on the DX200
list. If I'm not mistaken, the general conclusion was that you should
order it from yamaha.

You know what? The problem wasn't the potentiometer/dataknob...
I did some intensive repair on my An1x tonight, I'm the one with the
data kno values going awry and not responding (and sometimes Knob 4
values would pop up on the LCD even if I'm not touching it! Annoying
during gigs!!!) I'm sure some of you might have had something similar.

The problem is this: WEAK SOLDER JOINTS! Each row of knobs is a small
PC board and the eight pots are soldered to them. Well, on my faulty
Knob 4, I took a soldering iron and some solder and re-heated the
points, and added a little more new solder for good measure.

The knob goes back to normal! My AN1x works just like new now!

If anyone wants a step-by-step procedure, let me know and I'll post it
on the list or upload diagrams to the files section.

U.S.A.....these guys stock everything...get them to send you the catalogue
and find the pot that looks the most like the An1X one...

U.K.

http://www.maplin.co.uk/search.aspx?MenuNo=518&MenuName=Potentiometers&FromM
enu=y&doy=17m9&worldid=3

you'll have to determine what size potentiometer it is first 25K ,50K, 100K,
250K, 500K (Use a multimeter (£5 hardware stores or maplins e.t.c.measure
resistance on the 2 outside lugs on pot...will give correct reading)

is it audio taper for volume or linear for tone.....is it a push pull
potentiometer...e.t.c.

I'd be very careful opening up the An1X ...remember micro chips are static
sensitive so toucha bit of metal first to discharge any static electricity
from clothes..

basically stay away from anything that looks like a micro chip...handle the
board bythe edges...and take your time or you'll probably break it.......

then you'll have to do some soldering.....heat both joints.together to the
same temperature.:)....soldering a fine art just remember do everything real
fast...don't expose the joint for more than a split second of heat from
soldering iron...as soon as the solder melts get the iron away from the
joint ....have a fan nearby to get the fumes away and to help cool the joint
down.....
