I've never felt synthesizers were suited to 'realistic' orchestral patches. This type of
emulation is best suited to ROMplers and Samplers - either hardware or software. You
might want to check out SampleTank Free or Plugsound free if money is tight, otherwise a
Roland JV/XV series box can be had for a song on eBay.

That said, check the Files section here at Yahoo! Groups and navigate to the Tips & Tricks
directory where you will find a past 'how to' article "How To Program Synth Strings" which
might point you in the right direction.

Indeed, a JV-1010 or, better, a 2080 are very cheap, sound mint and are
great for meat and potatoes.
If you have nothing for coin, the Alesis S4+ is cheaper than the 1010, I
believe, and you can even use your own samples by writing them to pcmcia
cards. I find its control surface crap compared to the 2080 and not as
instant as the 1010. The 1010 doesn't really have a control surface,
just knobs. :P

Look in an1x voices folder in files. I uploaded a bank
called "Brass&Pad2.an1". Patch #15, "Cello Edge", is a good cello
sound, especially with a bit of chorus added. You might be able to
tweak this patch into a contrabass or violin. A few good Brass patches
in this bank also. I can't remember where I found it; I don't think it
was here though...thanks to whoever did
these!

None, you mean to tell me you did not know how that sound was made? ;-)

Here is the reference and link to enjoy....

"The film's music composer, Akira Ifukube, provided a memorable score, along with the sound of Godzilla's savage, otherworldly roar. "Originally, the sound department was trying to use the sounds of elephants, lions and eagles, but none of these recordings turned out to be useful," says Ifukube, 89. "So I proposed the idea to use the sound of a contrabass, which has a very deep tone. To make the sound more complex, I rubbed the strings with a leather glove. The sound was electronically processed, and that's how Godzilla's voice was created." "

Would be rather cool if Steve could pull this off.... he is very clever with some of his patches ...

I remember this from a Documentary I saw long ago. Many confuse the cello for a contrabass but the documentary did show a contrabass in use with the sound being made. Oh well...

[AN1x] Re: programming "realistic" orchestra patches

The shark music from "Jaws" would be much easier ;-) That "cello
edge" patch was one of a dozen or so an1x patches I copied on the
Ion. Later I found a Micron preset(the Yo-Yo Ma's) that was closer to
a real cello. I was going to copy more an1x patches over to Ion, but
there are too many differences between the two. Quite a few an1x
patches use hard sync/FM at same time. An1x has same osc serving as
sync master and FM modulator; this cannot be done on Ion, which is
also missing the osc "edge" parameter. I have the plg150an, and I'm
constantly suprised how versatile it can be... best $240. I ever
spent. -

the an200 I have works very well for me for those needs...
just need to get more tight with the editor to make saving things a bit easier on my end...
