I was just wondering if anyone had had any luck programming the synth sounds used by Seal on his song,"Crazy" and the Who songs, "Won't get fooled again" and "Teenage Wasteland". I've tried with no success but feel that this great instrument should be able to get those sounds. Thanks,Scott

The(Alesis)Ion has a preset called "Won't Get Fooled". Basically
it's 3 shaped sine waves, octave shift 0,+1,+2; into a vocal formant
filter and a 4pole lowpass filter in parallel. Lfo1 square mods amp
env sustain level, and lfo2 sine mods both filters' freq. If you have
a preset close to an organ sound, start with that, then mod the VCA
with an lfo square wave of about 4.5hz. Actually, I think the original
Who "Won't Get Fooled" was done on an organ; I can get real close to
the same sound by simply playing it on my CX-3. I think "Teenage
Wasteland" (and "Baba O'Riley") was originally done using an Arp2500
step sequencer... I haven't tried programming either one of
those...

"Teenage Wasteland" (actually named Baba O'Riley) has a lot of references if you Google it. There is an audio interview with Pete Townsend somewhere out there where he reveals the entire process. Don't forget to listen carefully, Townsend is moving around a lot on the keyboard -- this is not just a simple hold down the keys and let the arpeggiator play it song. Google kindly provided this excellent site: http://www.wbtracks.co.uk/synths.htm Here's a snip: I\ufffdd always thought this was programmed into Pete\ufffds huge modular ARP 2500 synth/sequencer. It certainly sounds like it could have been! It\ufffds hard to believe that the sound we hear on Baba O\ufffdRiley is really a Lowrey home organ. The model Pete used was a TBO-1, but for anyone wishing to recreate Baba O\ufffd Riley, just pick one up the following models to do the same job: TLO, DSO, TLS, TSO 25 and HR and GAK (seems to be the nearest). Pete is using a setting called \ufffdmarimba repeat.\ufffd <SNIP> ... go on and read the rest yourself. Also download the audio demo of the banjo repeat on the Lowery - amazing stuff for 40 year old technology. eee - Edward Edwards http://www.ezekielswheel.com http://www.untiedmusic.com/ezekiel

Thanks a lot for the post and I had always called it Baba O'Riley before but now that he's entered the "no-spin zone" or is that Bill O'Reilly I didn't want to call it that anymore. :) I had no idea it was actually done on a home organ, that's interesting and maybe gives me a little better insight into how to program that sound knowing that it's a repeating banjo part. That song and "Won't get fooled again" are two of my favorite songs by the Who and I think if I can get those synth type sounds down correctly they'll go over when we play. Once again, thanks a lot for your post. It helps....Scott

Yeah, it figures that "Baba O'Riley" was also played on the organ.
Funny; there's a quote from Pete Townshend on the back of the Arp2500
owners' manual where he says how suitable it is for stage work. Makes
me wonder how often they used it on stage. I had forgotten that
there's also an Ion preset called "Baba O'Riley". Very similar
to "Won't Get Fooled" in that an lfo square wave is used to mod VCA.
The key to this Ion patch though is that it uses key poly reset for
the lfo; I think the an1x only has key mono reset. May be another way
to get the same effect
though. -

I forget from where....some mail order place. Looks like they jumped in price quite a bit since then!! I'd go with the Behringer. There really isn't that much to a tremolo pedal anyway, I don't think. It'll probably do the job for the Who tune nicely. Linda

I'd suppose-if you still get one: http://www.musicstore.de/de/global/8_34_DJEFFEKTE_108_DJE0000974-000/0/0/0/detail/musicstore.html because Stereo in and out, kinda sidechain function, power supply included. Tom

My mom owned a Lowrey, that's the board I learned to play on. In
addition to the "repeat percussion" feature (square wave modulated
tremelo) it also had a pitch bender ("Hawaiian guitar" effect) and a
wah-wah built in. Both the bender and wah were activated by toe levers
at the top of the volume pedal.
You can hear the bender in use on most Soft Machine albums, Mike
Ratledge used a Lowrey rather than a Hammond.2006-02-01 by Linda Dachtyl

Me too....an HR88, I believe was the model I had. Pre wah-wah, I am
sure on mine.
I was so happy when we traded it in for a Hammond as the Who stuff was
the only thing that sounded good on that thing!
Linda2006-02-01 by John Williams
Hi, Probably the most prominent user of the Lowrey was Garth Hudson from The Band who also recorded extensively with Bob Dylan and a host of other folk. He made some gorgeous sounds with it, and used the pitch bend to great effect as well. I don't know what model he used but in the pics I've seen it looks like a full size job. His web site is http://www.garthhudson.com/. meatballfulton wrote:
