MIDI breakout box

2009-07-20 by duh! isnt it obvious???

Hey guys, been awhile, found my Log3 awhile back. Now trying to figure out a good MIDI breakout box for a bunch of my synths (picked up quite a few new ones that I wanna rack up. Suggestions?

This group has been a big help.

What do you mean w/ "midi-breakout-box",- a Midi Thru Box, a Midi Routing Matrix or a more complex matrix which processes midi data (for live-usage) also ?

Yeah, a Thru Box is what I need.

Do you prefer a DIY solution or a ready made unit?

Ready made so I can fit all 14 of my rack units into Notator instead of connecting and disconnecting

Hi!

At the moment I can't remember a ready made thrubox with 16 outputs.

Here is one with 8 outputs:

http://www.amazon.com/MIDI-Solutions-T8-8-Output-Active/dp/B0002GHAEG

Also M-Audio has 8 channel thru boxes...

But maybe some of your synths have a midi thru. Normally up to 3 gadgets can
be switched in line via MIDI thru without (big) problems. In this way you could also work with a
thrubox with only 4 outputs (4 output with up to 4 gadgets per output)

for the DIY guys: Maplin had a simple 8 output thrubox:
http://www.wiseguysynth.com/larry/schematics/thru/

I built this one and it works fine! The optocoupler circuit in this design has been wired correctly
To offer a low delay time - most circuits on the web miss the resistor on the base of the
optocoupler output darlington - this make the optocoupler quite slow.

There are several one out there new,- Midisolutions are the best actually.
Otherwise you find ´em at ebay.

I have 2 or 3 leftover in good condition form Yamaha ( combined Midi-Tru and Merger w/ routable clock port) and Monacor ( 2 Ins by 2x 4 outs,- A and B = 8 Outs) and a midisolutions Midi Merger.

I also have a 4-In, 8-Out Steinberg Midi Matrix 4/8 for sale, a rarity.
It has routing knobs, so you´re able to route any of the 4 midi ins to any of the 8 Midi outs manually on your demand.
Simple but great box for any midi studio.

PM if you´re interested please.

For 14 devices you need a 16x16 matrix like a Sycologic M16 w/ M16R remote controller.
It´s expandable to 48 Midi outs by the M16x output expansion units offering 16 Midi outs each.

Unfortunally these are discontinued since the late 80th,- but I have two and won´t miss ´em.

Waldorf had a 15x15 unit in the past too ...

Miditemp had the MT16X which was the best at all becuase it did everything you´d ever expect from midi processing.

There were also units by Jim Cooper, but these merge to ins only compared to the Miditemp.

Midisolutions Midi Tru boxes all lack of more inputs than ONE.
There´s a rack unit T-8,- one midi in and 8 midi outs,- so you could combine 2 of em if this fits for you.

What kind of latency difference is there between using a simple box
like this, vs. direct-hookups between Atari (/notator/midex) & sound-
machine?

Thanks

Ensoniq made the KMX-16... any opinions on that one? We have one
where I work but I have never used it.

I assume there´s no difference.
The "simple" box is manual switching where the more expensive and complex boxes had preset programmability and recall via remote controller and/or MIDI prg.-change commands as also the ability to send dedicated progam changes per midi channel to the devices being
connected to it´s MIDI outputs.
Sometimes, there were more additional features like mergable inputs and other midi data processing.

If you need any midi matrix at all depends on you midi hardware configuration planned.
So,- if you p.ex. only have one or very few soundmachines available, you probably don´t need it.
