Akai S612 Sample Dump / Editor

Akai S612 Sample Dump / Editor

2013-01-11 by macdougall.jason

Hello,
new to the group. I own an Akai s612 sampler early 12bit lo-fi that sounds sweet to my ears. After reading an early Ensoniq Transoniq zine from 1986, I discovered some software that will communicate with the Akai S612, Mirage, Emax and Emulator II. I'm trying to find Softsynth by Digidesign for Atari/Mac. If anybody knows where i can find/purchase/trade this I would be very grateful.
I would love to transfer the 64k memory back and fourth and manipulate wave forms, for single cycle work this program looks like the bomb.

Wow, this dug up some memories for me. Unfortunately, i do not have any copies of Softsynth, but i do remember it well. It was waaaay ahead of it's time in the late 80s/early 90s. A nice Mac II with a NuBus Digidesign Audiomedia board, a copy of Softsynth and you have a poor man's (not too poor actually) Fairlight. At least for back then.

If anyone does come across any copies of Softsynth, i would also be interested.

Best of luck to you,

I expect, w/ "Softsynth" you mean Digidesign Turbosynth application,- latest version v2.0.

I have the entire range of Digidesign apps except Digidesign Sounddesigner Emulator, which is a exclusive app for Emulator II.
It was already sold when I sold the Emulator II.

All the other is still here and for sale,- Sounddesigner Universal 1.5, Sounddesigner II and Masterlist, Accellerator card for ATARI Mega ST4, Soundtools AD-Converter, AD/DA-Converter, Digital Interface, cables.

Being 1st owner, I made the latest pics, up and running, in july 2012 for the australian "Scoperise" online mag hi-tech museum article because I use Creamware and Sonic Core DSP systems w/ ATARI MIDI as a front-end w/ C-Lab/Emagic Notator SL 3.21, Notator Logic 2.5 and C-Lab Emagic MIDI hardware.

Pics here Scoperise hi tech museum
Click the tabs labeled "Buds..." and you see the gear up and running.

Before it goes up to ebay this or next month, make me an offer if interested.
The complete system is a rare collectors item and I think you wont find it complete again in that condition.

You are definitely right about the name (Turbosynth as opposed to Softsynth, although the later may have been a more apt name).

Wow, SoundTools AD/DA, that goes back some years. I assume that all your apps are Atari and not Mac?

Well, according to last post of Peter Ullrich, theres also a Digidesign application called "Softsynth" existing.
Never knew that before and maybe its an ancestor of the later Turbosynth.

According to the Soundtools/Digidesign stuff I own,- yes, its all ATARI.

My friend and engineer owns the Mac versions and the converters/interfaces too,- and he has NuBus Macs in stock and just got my last screen adapter for such a machine,- so even my gear will leave the house, Ill have access when Ill ever need it again.

Im definitely running out of room in my house and have to sell much more next future, not only the ATARI stuff, also hardware instruments and modules.

soft synth and turbo synth are 2 different programs
they both have similar capabilities
ihave a soundtools 2 ad/da with an external box that takesa stereo jack and a spdiff input
and sounddesigner2
now soft synth was designed for doing wavetables
it did it like the se synthesis on the emax1 where you set the amplitudes for a series of wave forms made from additive synthesis and pitch envelopes
you do these 3 and then the program would interpolate
to create your evolving sound you could then dump it to a sampler mirage EII emax1 akai and a few others
the emax you can do this from the front panel

i don't think sound designer or turbo synth or softsynth will do what this
guy needs , if i remeber it only does x7000 or s900
not the 612

boo hoo

what about links to sample vision is this little gem around?

also

give me an ideal of what you will trade for softsynth?

Avalon ST looks good except there is no driver written for my S612 Sampler, furthest back they go is s700, And i believe the sampler rom is v1.0. Apperently on this unit there was a 3rd party v1.3 that allowed for six samples, currently this machine only does one shots. Softsynth SA( i believe a latter version) can be found, but it needs a special sound accelerator card to work in a Mac. But im hoping there is a 1986 version that works in the ATARI.
This thing has way more character than any plug-in I've used.

Yeah I went through a plug-in period too,f**king great but I always think hardware sound's better, and everybody is using plug-ins,you can tell them a mile off, little Jonny on his laptop and sister using a smartphone, actually that could sound interesting synced.. lol

You have obviously looked on web and seen the S612 software, try using the S700 driver I bet you it will work.

But anyway:-

I must go and download a manual for my Wavestation SR
