I'm using AVR Studio on  a Windows XP box.   I've also tried it using the GNU tool chain, avr-gcc, on a box running Ubuntu Linux.

Both of these boxes are using RS-232 serial ports, not USB ports.

Everything I've read is that the STK500 is a pretty robust product.  I'm baffled.

The message you are getting is strange. If Studio doe not find
the STK00 you will get a window "Connect Fail-Select AVR programmer".

Do you get this window? Are you using Tools>Program AVR>Connect ??
