Flowcode?

Flowcode?

2009-03-24 by David VanHorn

Is anyone here using "Flowcode"?

I just ran across it, looks interesting.

Looks like Real Bad News for programmers. Might give Project managers a tingly feeling all up and down their legs.

I dunno, my experience is that if you don't know anything about programming
you're going to get into trouble somewhere along the line. I doubt if it is
going to be able to create programs as good as those by someone who knows
what he's doing.

I'm wondering how useful it would be on real projects.

They show ARM and PIC targets as well.

Likely not, but if it's a tool that could be used to throw something
together quickly, then generate C or ASM that can be used as a
starting point, that might be interesting.

I don't think we should worry about barriers being lowered - there'll always be a need for people who have a more thorough understanding of programming. A tool like this will potentially bring the field further into the mainstream, which would open up new markets for programmers and consultants.

Change is always going to happen - we just need to work with flow.

"The use of macros allows students to control highly complex electronic
devices without getting bogged down in understanding the programming
involved."

Oh dear.... I thought writing code as a student was all about learning how
to understand the basic programming concepts so you can become a competent
programmer?

As for the whole product - I'm sure it makes some relatively solid, if
bloated and slow basic systems easy to bash out.. though those are easy
enough to do in C if you have your IO and display libraries sorted
already.... but I can't imagine it's a good system for making anything a bit
different (anyone want to try and implement bit banged 1-wire in flowcode??)

If I had any spare home project time, I'd grab the demo and have a play,
just for laughs... but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I agree, we know what we are doing in the most part ;) but letting a
program free to design code is a bad idea, how will it know that we are
using non standard ports for something ? or do we have to cookie cutter
all our hardware to fit the confines of a program to develop our firmware ?

Regards,

Kat

BTW Zack there are a fair few females doing code now ;)

Let's put a stop to this as Arnie is now too busy as a politician
