That's pretty sad, and judging from the messages and spelling and the page
source,
it's a typical script kiddie attack by either an 11 year old or a total
retard (or both).
These intelligence challenged wannabees really should go play with some high
voltages instead.

I read the AVRfreaks.org website often and often post answers to
question messages (under a different name). I too am saddened to see
its operation disrupted.

Perhaps some of the more advanced technical web experts can track
down the parties responsible for this attack so that they may be
visited in person and persuaded to cease and desist from all future
activity of this nature. I don't want to sound like a gangster. A
better metaphor would be an FCC (the government oversight agency for
broadcasting in the USA) visit to someone making pirate broadcasts on
commercial frequencies from their home. They confiscate their
equipment and explain the legal consequences of further violations.

If this attack on our community website is the work of juvenile
prankster, then the AVRfreaks should express our outrage to whoever
has responsibility for this person's actions. If a student is
responsible, e-mails from the AVR community all over the world calling
for their expulsion should be sent to the school that they attend.
A hacker-for-hire should be sued for damages in the civil court of the
country of the hack's origin by an AVRfreak member who is a citizen of
that country.

We do have options and we don't have to take this kind of nonsense
from these jerks.

The Internet is becoming replete with petty vandals, cheats, swindlers great
and small, and fools.
Those of us who are not so, are increasingly victimized.

Hmph, I'm starting to see a reason for the invention of William Gibson's
"Black Ice", which is a killing attack on viral or hacking attempts. I
think a visit with baseball bats is indeed in order, but not to the
dweebs, hit 'em where it hurts, to their computers! After we discover
all their handles and aliases of course.

IMO,

I understand and share the frsutration, and let's be honest, anger
all of you feel regarding these attacks. Let us keep our perspective,
however.

If we resort to what amounts to viliglantism, we are no better than
those about whom we are complaining. There are a variety of reasons
this is true, but a few of the most important are:

1) we have no reasonable means of ensuring that the parties we retaliate
against are truly the guilt parties (one of the greatest weaknesses of
vigillantism).

2) we have no ethical authority upon which to base such counter-attacks.

No. If we are indeed going to take any action at all, it should be
one of intensive investigation, identification of the guilty parties
the the extent possible, and contact with the ISPs of the guilty
parties, and with the parents (if they are minors), threatening them
with civil consequences if they fail to reign in their children's
behaviour.

Most ISPs, when provided with substantial evidence of such abuses,
will not hesitate to rescind access to abusive users.

While it may feel good emotionally to shout and make threats of
physical violence, it is uncivilized and counter-productive to do so in
public., It merely perpetuates the culture oif casual violence which
led to the attacks in the first place.

I suspect, Tom, that you would have a different perspective on this
subject if you were ever hit with a virus/worm/what-ever and put out of
business for a period of time as our company was last year...for a month
all we could do was manual record keeping, not to mention the data that
were lost because it even got into backups before we knew what was
happening. Both hardware and software firewalls as well as virus
scanners were in place.

But this too probably goes into the same category with those who feel
it's okay to steal hardware designs, software, movies, music, and other
intellectual property as is done daily just by downloading from other
thieves...

OT: Voltage regulator (TO-252)

2005-08-03 by Lasse Madsen

Hi All,

I have a problem and maybe you can help me.

I've designed a board with two LM1117 LDO regulators which are set to 3.3V
and 1.8V they work fine... except that they both draw 5.1mA in quiescent
current which makes my battery driven application useless... (I know it is
stated in the datasheet but I didn't think when I made the decision to use
it)

The housing for these monsters are TO-252 arranged in this way:

Pin:

  3 Voltage input
2 Voltage output
  1 Adjust pin

Where pin 2, is the tap and the footprint is viewed from above.

I will never draw more than 75mA in my application on the 3.3V rail and
about 5mA on the 1.8V rail

If you've heard of any regulator with a lower quiescent current please speak
up I've been searching the net for hours now but unable to find anything...

Even a leaded TO92 style regulator would be fine as I'm desperate...

Best regards
Lasse Madsen

In order to take any action you need to have access to the log files of
at least the web servers and maybe routers/firewalls. Without them
nothing is possible. Even with these if you can find the right
information it will probably only lead you to the next victim in the
chain where you again would need to have access to the logs etc. it is a
process that could take some time. Chances are that even if the trail
leads to a person's PC that person may themselves be a victim.

I see in the news that the German court did NOT substantially punish the
person who gleefully vandalized thousands of computers with a virus.

This is distressing. I'll bet the judge has rarely or never relied on a
computer and the Internet for his livelihood.

The problem with these people is they're extremely difficult to pin down.
Hopefully as technology advances we will also develop better ways of
tracking down the people who do these sort of things.

Well, heck. Lets get busy! Lone gunmen though will have problems
back-tracking the dweebs. We'll need permission to sniff logs and such.
Practically it will require bots or crawlers that will sniff back the
trail to the goobers. Hmm. A combination of 'net worm and web bot, hmm...
