Hi all..I'm new to AVRs :-)

Hi all..I'm new to AVRs :-)

2005-08-02 by Gwen

Have been using PIC chips, but decided to take the plunge and play
with some AVR chips.

To bad AvrFreaks went dead just when I found it and all the great guys
that hang out there :-(

Just got my STK500 and a butterfly..I mounted them to a board...I put
up a photo in the photo section if you want to take a look :-)

Can't wait to really get into AVR asm and the free C compiler and see
how much smoke I can make...

I will be asking some questions here soon I am sure...they will be
real newbie types so be prepared :-)

..Gwen..

WHAT?? Here too?? :-) As you can see we can be at more than
one place at once....and SOME of the 'Great Guys' lurk
around this list, including Smiley from time to time.

Hi Gwen -

Saw your original postings on the Freaks board. Glad to
have you here, also. The tenor is a little different -
response can be slow at times, fast at others. Many of the
same folks are at both places.

At this point, I have somewhat more experience on the
hardware side but there are good software folks here, also.

One of the things that will get you a quick and useful
response on problems is a fair amount of detail. The "I
just added an interrupt to my program and it crashes"
really does not help. You hopefully know the song and dance
- compiler type, chip type, sample code, pertinent register
initializations, clock source and speed, yadda yadda. Ditto
when it comes to "My 'x' doesn't work anymore" ('x' usually
being some kind of programmer). Of course, a cheerful tone
goes a really long ways - as opposed to "that (explitive
deleated) AVR is messing up again ..." Of course, problems
can drive one to really nasty thoughts - all of us
experience that. But, positive will get you a lot more
help! (My humble opinion, #42937).

Best wishes and welcome aboard,
Jim (KA7EHK on AVRFreaks)

Some of us only hang out over here anyway :)

Read up on configuration fuses, especially the clock.

Know that your AVR comes from the factory with the 1 MHz R/C osc enabled by
default.

Know that you can't set the programmer to faster than 250kHz on a new
device.

Know that AVRs reset on a VERY short pulse low on the /RESET line.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
