ATtiny45 problems (admin inserted subject)

I have been trying to develop a small board for running a ATtiny45 on, and have had some problems with getting started for a while now, here are the main difficulties.
I have an old Kanda STK300 board, runs the Atmega103L and comes with the AVRISP cable for downloading to the IC. There are many problems with this type of cable that I am already aware of and have been experiencing. The board uses this cable along with a 4053 IC and a few resisitors as the complete ISP interface. My question is am I able to just swap out the atmega103 and rewire with jumper wires the attiny45 to the proper connections and then use the board to temperarily download code to the tiny device? or are there some sorts of inherit problems with this method? I have already tried this of course and it didn't werk at all, but I figured that the problems were more with the actual ISP cable than the theory itself? The main message that I get back from the software is that the dongle is not recognised, or needs to be upgraded?? I am using a really old version if the AVRISP software, and Kanda wants to charge me for the patch or newer version, and I am not game for that- is there somewhere that I am able to get the newer version without having to pay for it? Or am I able to use this configuration with the AVR Studio4(I have not yet figured out how) or are there some proven alternative software out there (Opensource?) that I can use. I briefly tried to use WinAVR (AVRdude) but it didn't support the tiny45 as far as I could see??? Help here??
Basically what I need is a free method to download to the device using what I already have on hand!(not a hardware programmer that uses a device such as another AVR that needs firmware to operate!!!) Also, the AVRISP uses the 74HC244, and I managed to get a few from TI, but am wondering exactly what version it is that is typically used, as there are so many types of the same out there, and many have different pinouts...help there too (I would like to build a new AVRISP cable with the upgraded features). I know that this is alot of questions, but if I can get some help with them it will put me in a good place!! Thanks in advance, John D
