GCC-AVR Error w/ .ELF File

GCC-AVR Error w/ .ELF File

2007-05-13 by Joe Dubner

I'm using AVR Studio 4.12 (build 498) and an ECROS Technology JTAG ICE
to develop a small project on an ATmega16 using GCC. Everything was
working well until all of a sudden (and for no apparent reason) the
build process wouldn't complete and gave this error:

gcc plug-in: Error: Object file not found on expected location
C:\AVR\Projects\Thermostat\default\Thermostat.elf

I've deleted all of the files (except for the source) and rebuilt the
project but the error persists. Can anyone offer a solution?

Thanks,
Joe

I there were issues with ELF files in one or more recent
gcc releases. Check in the gcc forum of avrfreaks.net. You
should find a number of threads in the January-february
time frame.

That seems to tell you that the build was not successfull as the
cannot be found, I'm not very good with GCC however :-(

Make sure that you have the latest version of winavr if you use
studio 4.13 BUT the older version with studio 4.12.

Hmmmm, I thought I replied but I don't see my message so here it goes
again :-) However this message is different; _now_ I have the solution.

John, you hit the nail on the head. That lame-ass message was trying
to tell me the build was not successful (as you said). When I
switched from the Message window to the Build window, I found a
message complaining of a #if without a corresponding #endif. I fixed
that and everything is fine again (and no need to upgrade to a later
version of AVR Studio, etc.).

So, long story short, a compiler error (or in this case, a
preprocessor error) can give an inscrutable diagnostic. But then,
this is nothing new :-)

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
