Would you be running Vista, by chance?

Pretty much has to be a broken install then.
I'm running 4.13 here, on XP pro, with no issues on the help files.

I don't have a 2K machine around.

Why are you downloading the older Studio version? 4.13 is the latest,
no point putting up with OLD bugs when you can get FRESH NEW ones :-)

Because I know all the old ones and know what to expect?

Actually, I can't get 13 to install. I just discovered that I cannot
get 12 to install, either. I am getting anonymous errors, with zero
uesful information, and a reference to a log file that does not exist.

Have you reported this to avr@atmel.com?

Good.. Everyone having tools issues should report them. This helps
Atmel allocate resources to fixing those problems.

Re: [AVR-Chat] *doggone it all to heck*

OK, now I am beginning to beleive my STK-500 may be faulty

I just plugged an AT90S2313 into it. Correct socket, all jumpers are
set appropriately, per the User Guide. When I turn it on, the "Target
Power LED begins slowly blinking (a condition not documented in the
User Guide) and the Status LED begins also blinking slowly, which the
USer GU8ide asserts indicates a short circuit on the AREF power line.
Weird.

I also cannot read or write the to chip without getting the same
meaningless error messages I have been referring to all along, including
the error message CLAIMING a log has been written. I can locate *NO*
newly written log fiels anywhere on my system (I have used
Start->Search->Files and Folders to no avail).

This makes no sense. Has anyone in here ever received, or heard of
anyone receiving an STK-500 that didn;t work correctly? Mine came from
Digikey a few weeks ago

OH, yerah, power supply: I am running mine off a 12 volt rail, and the
regulatro is not even noticeably warm to the touch, so I don;t think
that is a problem.

Go to it's folder on the hard disk and search for help files ending in
.chm. Double-click on them to see if they work.

If not, then there's something wrong with your HTML helpfile
connfiguration in Windows. This can possibly be fixed by downloading
the HTML helpfile toolit from Microsoft and installing that.

I'd also use Windows update to ensure that you're current with patches
because this has been patched several times over the last couple years.

If worse comes to worse, and I hope it doesn't, you can use chmmagic
to convert .chm files to the .pdf format.

Just for chagrins, have you measured VCC?
The reg might be cool, because it's not outputting much current,
because it's blown..

Mine is running a M128 with NO leds on, and the left reg is very warm,
right is relatively cool, with 12V input. "very warm" as in "I don't
want to keep my finger on it"

Well I don't think I can help much more without you answering
questions, sorry.

As a suggestion I would unplug everything off the STK and
have a look at VTG and VREF and FINALLY tell us what the ISP
frequency is set to like I have asked a few times before.

The 12V rail for the STK is it regulated? If not what is the
ripple on that rail?

I don't know of any log files that gets written by the STK,
the only info you get is at the bottom of the programming screen
as far as I know.

My WinBlows auto-updates whenever Mickey$hit says there is an update
available.

I suppose. Or better, still, give up on WinBlows and move to
GCC/GNU tools and linux.

(*grrrr*)

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
