HI, VZ's are notorious for having the backlights fail. YOu can get a small light and illuminate them from the front, or get a replacement foil and do surgery. I went for the small light... I think they sort of fail slowly. There is a brightness feature, though. Hold down the "display" button and move the "value" slider. There's a German company that makes the foil replacements, though I don't have the link any more. Maybe somebody else has it?
